Chapter 8 - The Video Proof

Patricia grabbed the edge of the mahogany table, her knuckles white, attempting to reclaim her collapsing dominance.
"So what?!" Patricia yelled, throwing her hands in the air. "So you have money! That doesn't give you the right to treat us like dirt! You insulted me in your kitchen yesterday! You treated me like a beggar! I reacted because you pushed me!"
I looked at David. He pressed a button on his tablet.
The conference room lights dimmed slightly, and the massive monitor switched to the crystal-clear, high-definition security camera footage from my kitchen the previous evening.
The audio echoed loudly through the room’s surround-sound speakers:
The sharp, loud CRACK of silk tearing.
Patricia’s face twisted in malice, holding two fistfuls of torn white silk.
Patricia's voice booming: "Look at you! Playing rich lady in my son’s house! My son pays for everything in this house!"
The camera panning over to Daniel standing motionless by the refrigerator, looking at the floor, completely silent.
Patricia pointing her manicured finger: "Tell her!"
Daniel’s quiet, cowardly response: "Mom, let’s just go."
The video paused on a freeze-frame of my face—calm, heartbroken, but entirely composed—looking down at the ruined eight-hundred-dollar dress.
The silence in the conference room was deafening.
Evelyn turned to Patricia, her eyes wide with horror. "Patricia... you tore her dress right off her? In her own home?"
"She... she was being arrogant!" Patricia stammered, looking frantically around the room, finding zero support. "She showed off! She told me the dress cost eight hundred dollars just to make me feel poor!"
"She answered your question, Mom," Richard said softly, shaking his head in complete disbelief. "You ripped her clothes. And Daniel... you just stood there?"

Daniel buried his face on the table, letting out a quiet, pathetic sob. "I didn't know what to do..."
"You knew exactly what to do," I said, standing up from my chair. "You chose to protect your mother’s lie instead of protecting your wife. You let her destroy my property because you were too cowardly to admit that you were living on my dime."
