Chapter 6 - The Emergency Family Meeting

At 4:00 PM, Daniel’s elder brother, Richard, called my private line three times in rapid succession. When I finally answered, his voice was tight with anger and confusion.

"Claire, what on earth is going on?!" Richard demanded without greeting me. "Mom called me sobbing, saying you’ve gone completely insane! You threw Daniel out on the street? You put security guards on the house? She said you’re trying to ruin Daniel’s reputation!"

"Richard," I said calmly, setting my tea cup down on its saucer. "Did your mother happen to mention why she was locked out this morning?"

"She said you two had a minor argument about household expenses!" Richard shouted. "She said you insulted her, and when Daniel defended her, you locked the doors like a crazy person! He’s staying at a budget hotel right now, Claire! This is humiliating for our family!"

"I am hosting an emergency family meeting at David Vance’s legal office downtown at six o'clock," I announced coldly. "You, your wife, your mother, and Daniel need to be in that conference room. If you are not there, the formal criminal documentation regarding Daniel’s financial activities will be filed directly with the county clerk without further discussion."

"Criminal documentation?!" Richard gasped. "Claire, what are you—"

I disconnected the line before he could finish.

At 5:50 PM, I arrived at the high-rise office building in downtown Northbrook, accompanied by David Vance. We walked into the glass-walled primary conference room.

Sitting around the long mahogany table were Patricia, Daniel, Richard, and Richard’s wife, Evelyn. Patricia sat with her arms crossed tightly, wearing a dark wool coat, her face rigid with indignation. Daniel sat beside her, staring blankly at his fingernails, looking like a man awaiting execution.

"This is an absolute farce," Patricia snapped the moment I stepped into the room. "Bringing us to a lawyer’s office like we're common criminals! You should be ashamed of yourself, Claire!"

I sat down at the head of the table, opened my leather briefcase, and pulled out a stack of pristine, bound documents.

"Let's begin," I said.
