Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Ring

Six months later.
The evening was warm and gentle, marked by a deep purple sunset over the hills.
The Vale mansion was filled with the soft, ambient sound of classical piano music and the quiet murmur of twenty invited guests—not syndicate bosses or security lieutenants, but local artists, university professors, and civic leaders whom Vivien had invited for a charity auction benefiting youth literacy programs in the city.
In the center of the restored drawing room, where the overturned side table and bloodstain had once been, sat a grand Steinway piano.
Vivien stood near the fireplace, wearing a stunning emerald-green evening gown, laughing softly as she spoke with an elderly couple from the historical society. Her poise was absolute, her charm warmth itself.
Dominic stood near the french doors leading to the terrace, wearing a crisp black tuxedo, a glass of vintage sparkling water in his hand.
Marcus stepped up beside him, dressed in a sharp dark suit that concealed his tactical earpiece.
"Perimeter is clear, Boss," Marcus reported in a quiet whisper. "Four mobile units on the outer drive. Not a single bird flies over this property without us knowing."
"Thank you, Marcus," Dominic said softly. "Enjoy the evening. Have a glass of wine."
Marcus smiled faintly, nodded, and quietly retreated toward the grand hallway.
Dominic walked across the polished marble floor, his eyes fixed entirely on his wife. As he approached, the elderly couple excused themselves with polite nods, leaving Vivien standing alone by the hearth.
She turned to face him, her emerald gown catching the warm flickering light of the fireplace.
"You look distant tonight, Dominic," she said, reaching out to gently adjust the lapel of his tuxedo jacket. "Are you thinking about work?"
"No," Dominic replied, covering her hand with his own. "I was thinking about the first night you walked into this room seven years ago."
Vivien paused, her expression softening. "You thought I was a quiet librarian who was terrified of her own shadow."
"I thought you were the gentlest thing I had ever seen," Dominic corrected gently. "And I was terrified that my world would break you."
Vivien let out a low, musical laugh, leaning her head against his shoulder. "And now?"
"Now," Dominic whispered, leaning down to kiss her cheek, "I know that you were the one protecting me all along."
Vivien raised her left hand, catching the firelight on the simple gold wedding band she had worn every day through the blood, the storm, and the ashes.

"We protected each other, Dominic," she said, looking up at him with clear, unwavering devotion. "And that's the only secret we'll ever keep in this house."
Dominic wrapped his arm around her waist, pulling her close as the piano music swelled softly in the background, filling the warm, bright room with a harmony that no shadow could ever touch again.
