Chapter 4 - The Patriarch’s Gambit

Richard Mercer stepped fully into the harsh glare of the overhead bulb.
He wore a dark velvet smoking jacket, but his eyes were bright, razor-sharp, and entirely sober. The slow, lazy patriarch who had barely looked up from his drink during dinner had vanished. In his place was the former federal prosecutor who had built a real-estate and pharmaceutical fortune by crushing anyone who stood in his path.
"Set the ledger down on the table, Claire," Richard said softly. His voice didn't carry rage; it carried the cold, absolute authority of a man who owned everything in his field of vision.
I held the black notebook tightly against my ribs, refusing to move.
"You're making a catastrophic mistake, Richard," I said, forcing my voice to remain level and clear. "My colleague has my real-time location. The flash drive data has already been mirrored to an offsite server. If I don't check in within fifteen minutes, federal agents will raid this property."
Richard smiled—a small, terrifying fold of skin around his thin lips.
"Do you really think Maya is going to answer your call, my dear?"
My heart stopped.
Richard pulled a small, silver radio jammer from his pocket and set it casually on the workbench beside Daniel’s laptop. Its blue light was pulsing, emitting a high-frequency white-noise field that severed all cellular and satellite signals within a two-hundred-yard radius.
"The moment your Volvo crossed my gate threshold at 9:51 p.m., our perimeter sensors picked up your signal," Richard said, taking three slow steps toward me, the gun never wavering. "Did you really think a family that operates a seventy-million-dollar offshore biological market wouldn't monitor its own driveway?"
"Where is Emily?" I demanded, taking a half-step back until my heel touched the edge of the steel extraction table.
"Emily is where she belongs," Richard replied coldly. "She possesses a rare, highly valuable genetic mutation—a genetic anomaly that produces elevated levels of auto-immune therapeutic proteins. Do you know what the bio-tech labs in Tokyo and Geneva pay for fifty milliliters of her serum, Claire? Two hundred thousand dollars."
"She’s your daughter!" I spat, disgust burning through my fear. "You're bleeding your own child like an animal!"
"I am preserving our family's empire!" Richard roared, his eyes flashing with sudden, terrifying madness. "My grandfather built this estate! My father built our firm! And when the markets crashed six years ago, it was Emily’s blood that saved us from bankruptcy! She is not a victim, Claire. She is our primary corporate asset!"
Behind the heavy steel door, a muffled crash echoed through the wall.
BANG-BANG-BANG.
Someone was hammering on the inside of the vault door.
"Richard!" Victoria’s voice filtered through the intercom system mounted near the safe. "Richard, Daniel is down! The girl... the girl locked him in the rear corridor!"
Richard’s eyes flicked toward the intercom for a fraction of a second.
It was the only window I needed.
I reached behind me, grabbed a heavy stainless-steel tray holding three glass centrifuge tubes, and hurled it with all my strength directly into Richard’s face.
CRASH.
The glass shattered against his arm and chest. Richard grunted, his shot going wild as a bullet tore through the concrete floor inches from my feet with a deafening THUD-BANG.
I didn't wait to see if he recovered.
I lunged forward, slamming my shoulder into his chest with all the force of my body weight. Richard stumbled backward, crashing into the tall wine rack. Dozens of vintage glass bottles rained down around him, smashing onto the concrete floor in a lake of dark red wine and shattered glass.

I snatched the black leather ledger, turned, and bolted up the spiral staircase two treads at a time.
Behind me, Richard screamed into the intercom: "Lock down the house! Close the perimeter security grilles now!"
