Chapter 5 - The Boy Under the Bridge

By midnight, the house was locked down under maximum security.

I had dispatched eight of my most trusted soldiers to watch Dr. Harrison Vance’s mansion in Buckhead. But Vance had already skipped town—his house was empty, his hard drives wiped, his luxury cars still in the garage. Someone had warned him the moment Sophia failed to return from the park.

I sat in Lila’s bedroom, watching her sleep. Marco had administered an immediate oral chelating agent—a medication designed to bind with heavy metals in her bloodstream and flush them out before permanent optic nerve necrosis set in. He estimated her sight would begin to return within three weeks if we kept the treatment constant.

She looked so small under the pink blankets.

I reached down and smoothed a strand of dark hair from her forehead. Clara’s hair. Clara’s soft, gentle features. I had spent seven years trying to keep her safe from my world, only to allow the worst predator of all to sit at her breakfast table every morning.

I stood up, turning to Frank, who was standing in the doorway holding a tactical folder.

"Did you find the boy?" I asked.

"Yeah, Boss," Frank said softly. "It wasn't easy. He lives in an abandoned rail yard near the old meatpacking district on the Westside. His name is Leo. Ten years old."

"How did he know about Sophia?"

Frank opened the folder, handing me a printout of surveillance photos taken from a street camera three blocks from our house.

"Leo isn't just a street kid," Frank explained. "His older brother was Tommy Brooks—one of the valet drivers at the country club where Sophia and Dr. Vance used to meet. Two months ago, Tommy found a glass vial dropped in the back of Vance’s Mercedes. He tried to blackmail Vance for five grand to pay off his rent."

"What happened to Tommy?" I asked, my eyes narrowing.

"They found him in the Chattahoochee River three weeks ago," Frank said grimly. "Drowned. Local police ruled it an accidental drug overdose. But Leo knew his brother didn't take drugs. The kid started following Sophia, trying to find proof that Vance killed his brother. That's how he saw her meeting Vance in the park behind the bakery... and heard them talking about the drops she was putting in Lila’s food."

A ten-year-old boy had done more to protect my daughter than all my bodyguards, all my millions, and all my security systems combined.

"Get the SUV," I said, putting on my heavy leather coat. "I’m going to talk to Leo."
