Chapter 6 - The Eviction at Dawn

At 7:00 AM the following morning, three heavy moving vans and four private security vehicles pulled up the long, stone driveway of the Vance Estate in Concord.

The morning air was crisp and freezing. The grand white limestone mansion sat nestled among towering oak trees, looking like an untouchable palace of wealth and privilege. But inside, chaos reigned.

I stepped out of Ethan’s black Maybach, wearing a long ivory wool coat that covered my bandage. Ethan walked beside me, his arm wrapped securely around my waist, flanked by Mr. Harlan and six uniform security officers carrying legal eviction notices.

Before we reached the front steps, the heavy carved mahogany doors flew open.

My mother rushed out onto the porch, dressed in an expensive cashmere sweater, her hair unwashed, her face pale and sunken from a night without sleep. Lila followed behind her, wrapped in a designer blanket, her eyes red from crying.

“What is the meaning of this?” Beatrice shrieked, seeing the moving vans. “Claire! How dare you bring these people here! Your father is sitting in a cold holding cell because of you!”

“Father is sitting in a holding cell because he committed a felony, Mother,” I said, stopping at the base of the grand stone staircase.

“This is our house!” Lila screamed from behind Beatrice, her voice shrill and hysterical. “Dad owns this property! You can’t throw us out! Where are we supposed to go?”

Mr. Harlan stepped forward, pulling a court-certified eviction warrant from his coat.

“As of 4:00 PM yesterday, Miss Claire Vance is the sole, absolute owner of this property,” Mr. Harlan declared, his voice echoing off the limestone walls. “You have thirty minutes to collect your personal clothing and vacate the premises.”

“This is absurd!” Beatrice yelled, running down the steps toward me. “I am your mother, Claire! I gave you life! I fed you, I clothed you, I raised you! You owe this family everything!”

I stood my ground as she approached, not taking a single step back.

“You didn't raise me, Beatrice,” I said, my voice ice cold. “You used me. You treated me like a servant in my own home. You made me work sixteen-hour days at Vance Logistics while Lila went to Paris. You took my earnings to pay for her parties. And when I finally found happiness, you tried to smash my face with a hammer so she could take it from me.”

“Claire... please...” Lila sobbed, coming down the steps, her arrogance completely dissolved into pathetic desperation. “We don't have any money! Dad’s bank accounts were frozen by the state this morning! We can’t even pay for a hotel!”

Ethan stepped forward, his eyes fixing on Lila with total disdain.

“You have twenty-five minutes left,” Ethan said, his voice dropping like an anvil. “If you are still on this property when the timer runs out, my security team will have you removed for criminal trespassing.”

Beatrice gasped, looking at Ethan, then at me, realizing for the first time in her life that there was no mercy left in either of us. The daughter she had spent thirty years stepping on was now holding the key to her entire existence.
