Chapter 9 - The Trial of Robert Vance

Six months later, the main courtroom of the Suffolk County Courthouse was packed to capacity for the trial of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts versus Robert Vance.
The trial had captivated the entire nation. Headlines read: “The Hammer and the Heritage: How a Billionaire’s Bride Defeated Her Abusive Empire.”
My father sat at the defense table in a dark grey prison suit. Six months in custody had broken his aristocratic posture. His hair was completely white, his skin sagged, and his once-boastful eyes were hollowed with bitter despair. Beside him sat his public defender; his high-priced private attorneys had abandoned him three months prior when his bank accounts dried up.
My mother and Lila sat in the back row of the gallery, wearing plain, inexpensive clothes from a department store. They were living in a small two-bedroom rented apartment on the outskirts of the city, surviving entirely on the modest income Lila earned working as an entry-level receptionist—a job Ethan’s team had quietly arranged to ensure she didn't starve.
I took the witness stand, wearing a crisp navy-blue suit, my hair styled elegantly to the side. The thin, delicate scar on my cheek was visible under the soft courtroom lights—a mark I had refused to cover with makeup.
The prosecutor stepped up to the podium. “Miss Vance, can you describe for the jury what occurred on the afternoon of October 12th in the private fitting room?”
I looked directly at my father. I did not flinch. I did not shake.
“My father entered the room holding a claw hammer,” I said, my voice smooth, articulate, and absolute. “He smashed the mirror behind me. Then he told me that my life belonged to my sister, and he struck me in the face.”
“And what did your mother say during this incident?” the prosecutor asked.
“My mother said: 'You’re older; yield your life to your sister.'”
Gasps of horror rippled through the jury box. Several jurors glared at my father with utter revulsion.
The prosecutor turned to the judge. “Your Honor, we present Exhibit A: the live audio and video recording retrieved from the boutique security system and the victim’s mobile device.”
The courtroom lights dimmed. The high-definition monitors mounted around the room flickered to life.
My father’s terrifying, bellowing voice echoed through the courtroom speakers: “Beg!”
Then came the sound of the metal hitting my cheek, followed by my mother’s cold, unfeeling voice: “Yield your life to your sister.”
The video showed my father lifting the hammer a second time, followed by Mr. Harlan stepping forward, and the six witnesses surrounding the room.

When the video finished, the silence in the courtroom was absolute.
My father bowed his head, resting his face in his trembling hands, knowing that no defense in the world could save him from what he had done.
