Chapter 2 - THE LAIR OF THE DEVIL

The private medical suite on the third floor of the Ashford estate did not look like a hospital room. It was lined with dark walnut paneling, plush leather armchairs, and state-of-the-art medical equipment concealed behind sleek wooden cabinets.

At 11:30 p.m., Dr. Samuel Chen, Gabriel’s personal physician who had treated gunshot wounds for the syndicate for fifteen years, set down his medical instruments with a heavy sigh.

Harper sat on the edge of an examination table, wrapped in a thick white terrycloth bathrobe that smelled faintly of lavender and crisp sea salt. Her calf had been expertly stitched with four small sutures, and a protective brace had been gently wrapped around her fractured ribs.

Gabriel stood by the rain-streaked window, an unlit cigarette resting between his long fingers, watching the heavy storm lash against the iron security gates outside.

"She’s severely malnourished, Gabriel," Dr. Chen said in a quiet, professional tone, stepping out into the small anteroom with the mob boss. "Two ribs are fractured, roughly three weeks old. Multiple contusions across the back and shoulders consistent with blunt force trauma. Her wrist has an old hairline fracture that never set properly."

Gabriel’s jaw worked rhythmically. "Will she recover?"

"Physically? Yes," Dr. Chen answered. "With proper nutrition, rest, and pain management, the bones will knit in a month. But the trauma... whoever did this to her was methodical. He knew how to hit her where clothes would cover the marks."

Gabriel reached into his pocket and pulled out a gold lighter, snapping it open. The tiny flame illuminated the sharp angles of his face.

"He's a cop," Gabriel said quietly.

Dr. Chen paused. "What?"

"Only a cop or a soldier hides bruises under the collarline," Gabriel muttered, snapping the lighter shut without lighting the cigarette. "Search her name. Harper Queen."

Dr. Chen pulled a tablet from his bag, tapping the screen quickly. Within two minutes, the private database connected to the Ashford intelligence network pulled up her public records.

"Harper Elizabeth Queen," Dr. Chen read aloud. "Twenty-six years old. Formerly married to Derek Lawson."

The name hung in the air like poison.

Gabriel turned his head slowly. "Lawson?"

"Officer Derek Lawson," Dr. Chen confirmed, reading the display. "Precinct 12, Roxbury. Detective second-class. Four internal affairs investigations for excessive force, all dismissed. His father is Deputy Commissioner Richard Lawson."

Gabriel let out a quiet, dangerous laugh that vibrated through the quiet room.

Precinct 12 was the dirtiest precinct in Boston. Derek Lawson was a known narcotics extortionist who had been taking kickbacks from the O'Sullivan syndicate for three years. Gabriel had been building a file on Lawson’s unit to use as leverage against the department.

He had not known the dirty detective had a wife.

He had not known the monster beat her until her ribs cracked in the dark.

Gabriel pushed open the door to the medical suite and stepped inside.

Harper jumped slightly at the sound, her hands instantly gripping the edges of the white bathrobe. She looked up at him, her pale face framed by her honey hair, looking absurdly small against the vast leather chair.

"Your brother's name is Noah," Gabriel stated, sitting down in the chair across from her.

Harper’s heart skipped a beat. A fresh surge of panic hit her chest. "How... how do you know about Noah?"

"I know everything that happens under my roof, Harper," Gabriel said smoothly. "He is eight years old. You moved him to an apartment on 4th Street in Dorchester four days ago. The neighborhood is controlled by drug dealers."

Harper lowered her head, tears filling her eyes again. "It was... it was the only place I could afford without a credit check. Derek... Derek took my name off our bank accounts. He kept my passport, my birth certificate... everything."

"You ran away four days ago," Gabriel noted, observing her closely.

"I had to," she whispered, her voice choking with raw emotion. "He... he hit Noah. He didn't mean to—he was throwing a lamp at me, and it grazed Noah’s arm. I promised myself I would stay as long as it was just me. But the moment he touched my brother..."

She pressed her face into her trembling hands, her shoulders shaking with quiet, silent sobs.

Gabriel watched her.

He had seen horror. He had seen betrayal. But watching this fragile, broken girl who had spent four days scrubbing floors on fractured ribs just to keep a roof over her little brother’s head touched something deep inside his steel-clad chest.

Something he thought had died ten years ago when his own family was betrayed.

Gabriel leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees, bringing himself eye-level with her.

"Listen to me very carefully, Harper," Gabriel said, his voice firm, unwavering, and absolute. "You are not going back to Dorchester tonight."

Harper looked up through her tears. "What?"

"Vance is already on his way to 4th Street with three security units," Gabriel informed her, checking his watch. "Noah will be packed and brought to the west wing of this estate within thirty minutes. You and your brother are staying here."

"I... I can't afford this, Mr. Ashford!" Harper stammered, shaking her head frantically. "I don't have money for this kind of place! I’m just a maid—"

"You are no longer a maid," Gabriel cut her off flatly. "You are under my protection."

"Derek will find me!" she cried out, her eyes wide with terror. "He's a cop! He has access to state tracking systems, license plate readers, police databases! The moment he realizes I’m gone, he’ll use his badge to tear the city apart until he finds us!"

May you like

Gabriel stood up to his full height. He looked down at her with a dark, regal arrogance that made the entire room feel smaller.

"Let him try," Gabriel said softly. "The Boston Police Department stops at my iron gate, little bird. Inside these walls, Derek Lawson is nothing but a man waiting for his judgment."
