Chapter 9 - THE NEW DAWN

One month later.

Winter had arrived in Boston, dusting the historic brick mansions of Beacon Hill in a beautiful, glittering blanket of white snow.

Inside the grand living room of the Ashford estate, a massive brick fireplace crackled with a warm, comforting fire, casting a golden light over the high carved ceilings and plush velvet furniture.

Noah sat on the thick Persian rug near the hearth, laughing happily as he built a complex lego castle with Dr. Chen, who had become a frequent evening visitor to the estate.

Harper stood by the wide floor-to-ceiling bay window, watching the snow fall gently over the manicured gardens below.

She looked entirely transformed.

She wore an elegant emerald-green wool sweater dress that hugged her healthy, restored figure. Her honey-colored hair fell in glossy, loose waves over her shoulders, her skin was radiant and clear, and her hazel eyes—once shadowed by constant fear—shone with a vibrant, peaceful light.

The bruised maid was gone.

In her place stood a woman who had reclaimed her dignity, her strength, and her life.

Soft, familiar footsteps sounded on the hardwood floor behind her.

Gabriel walked into the room, wearing a tailored navy wool suit without a tie. He stepped up beside her at the window, setting a warm glass of spiced cider into her hands.

"How are you feeling today?" Gabriel asked softly, his shoulder brushing against hers.

"Wonderful," Harper smiled, taking a sip of the warm cider. She looked sideways at him. "I read the morning news."

"Did you?" Gabriel raised an eyebrow.

"Derek was transferred to the federal penitentiary in Colorado this morning," she said quietly, feeling no rage, no fear, and no lingering bitterness in her heart as she spoke his name. "Thirty years. No parole."

Gabriel looked out at the falling snow, taking a slow sip of his drink. "He got off easy."

Harper turned her body toward him, setting her glass down on the wide marble sill. She reached out, her cool, soft hand sliding gently into his broad palm, her fingers intertwining with his.

"Thank you, Gabriel," she whispered, looking up into his cold blue eyes, which softened the moment they landed on her face. "Not just for saving me from Derek... but for giving Noah a home. For giving me my life back."

Gabriel looked down at her, his dark hand gently lifting to cup her jaw, his thumb smoothing over her soft cheek—the same spot where he had wiped away her tears a month ago.

"You gave me something too, Harper," Gabriel murmured, his voice thick with unexpressed emotion. "This house was just an empty fortress made of stone and blood before you walked into my bathroom."

Harper felt her heart beat wildly against her ribs, a deep, overwhelming warmth filling her entire chest as she looked into the eyes of the man who had become her world.

"I don't want to leave, Gabriel," she confessed softly, her hazel eyes locked onto his lips. "I don't want to go to New York. I don't want to run anymore."

Gabriel’s blue eyes flared with a deep, passionate intensity.

"You are never leaving this house, little bird," Gabriel swore softly. "Not unless you want to."

He leaned down, his lips closing over hers in a deep, breathtaking kiss that washed away every memory of pain, every shadow of fear, and every tear she had ever shed.

May you like

Harper wrapped her arms tightly around his neck, pulling herself close against his broad chest, returning his kiss with all the love and devotion that had blossomed in her heart.

Near the fireplace, Noah looked up from his lego castle, saw them kissing, made a funny face, and went right back to building his tower with Dr. Chen.
