Chapter 4 - The Sound of Truth

The crisp, high-definition audio recording began to play from the phone’s speakers, filling the vast high-rise room with terrifying clarity.
“You can’t even make a proper meal!” Bernice’s voice shrieked through the speakers, sharp, shrill, and unhinged. “You spend Christopher’s money all day and still have the nerve to talk back to me!”
Then came the sickening, wet sound of a hard palm striking human flesh.
SMACK!
A sharp gasp, followed by Savannah’s trembling, broken voice: “Please... Bernice... don't... the baby...”
“Shut up! You’re nothing! You’re a pathetic piece of trash who thinks she can control my son!”
Another loud impact, followed by the sound of heavy shuffling, hair being yanked, and Savannah’s low, muffled moan of physical agony as she hit the floor.
The recording continued, playing the exact moment I opened the front door, the heavy bag dropping, and Bernice’s instant, chilling shift in tone from a violent predator to a sweet, concerned mother: “Christopher! What are you doing here? Oh, honey, you scared me… Savannah tripped.”
The silence that followed the end of the audio track was absolute.
Arthur Vance’s face had drained completely of color. The experienced defense attorney looked at the phone, then slowly turned his head to stare at his client.
Bernice’s mouth was open, her lips trembling, her eyes wide with a sudden, overwhelming terror.
"Where... where did you get that?" she stammered, her voice shaking violently. "That's... that's modified! That's fake! She manipulated it!"
"Our apartment is equipped with a high-end Smart Home security network, Bernice," I lied smoothly, stepping closer to her. "Every hallway, every common area, every single inch of this house has encrypted audio and visual feeds recorded directly to a off-site cloud server in real-time."
I leaned down until my face was inches from hers.
"I have three years of audio, Bernice. I have three years of high-resolution cloud photos of every bruise, every burn, every laceration you inflicted on my wife. I have time-stamped medical logs verified by regional hospitals. And I have the financial transfer records proving you spent thirty-six months laundering over one hundred thousand dollars out of my personal account into Vanessa's fraudulent company in Sacramento."
Arthur Vance quickly reached out, pulled his briefcase shut, and stepped entirely away from Bernice.
"Mrs. Miller," Vance said rapidly, his professional composure completely shattered. "You did not inform me that there was active, high-definition digital audio and physical evidence of domestic violence on record."
"Arthur, shut up!" Bernice screamed, panic breaking through her voice. "Fix this! You’re my lawyer!"
"I cannot represent you in an active extortion or criminal assault matter where incontrovertible evidence exists, Mrs. Miller," Vance said coldly, pulling his papers back into his bag. "I am withdrawing as your counsel immediately."
He turned, slammed the elevator button, and stepped inside as soon as the doors parted, leaving Bernice standing alone on the marble floor.
She turned back to me, her eyes wild, her trembling hands reaching out toward my coat.
"Christopher... my boy... please," she sobbed, her voice shifting back into the pathetic, manipulating whine she had used on me my entire life. "I did it for you! I did it because I saw how she was taking over your life! She was spending your money! She was making you forget your own mother! I was just trying to protect our family!"
I reached out, took her wrist, and pulled her hand off my coat with cold, effortless strength.
"You aren't my family, Bernice," I said, staring into her eyes with pure, unadulterated disgust. "You haven't been my family since the moment you laid your hands on my pregnant wife."

I pointed toward the open elevator.
"Get out."
