Chapter 7 - The Arrest

The heavy double doors of the private master suite swung open.

Detective Marcus Reed walked out, flanked by three uniformed San Diego Police officers and Eleanor Vance.

Bernice’s smile froze instantly. Her face turned ash-white as she scrambled backward into the leather armchair, her eyes darting frantically toward the elevator.

"What is this?!" she shrieked, her voice turning into a high-pitched, terrifying squeak. "Christopher! What are you doing?!"

"Bernice Miller," Detective Reed said in a clear, thunderous voice, pulling a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his tactical belt. "You are under arrest for felony domestic battery against a pregnant person, assault with a deadly weapon, extortion, and grand financial fraud."

"No! No!" Bernice screamed, flailing her arms violently as two uniformed officers stepped forward and grabbed her wrists. "Get your hands off me! I am a senior citizen! I am his mother! Christopher, tell them to stop! Tell them!"

Christopher stood up slowly from the sofa. He didn't look angry. He looked at her with pure, unadulterated disgust.

"You confessed to the entire extortion scheme on camera, Bernice," Christopher said, pointing to the subtle, high-definition security camera mounted on the central ceiling beam above her head. "Every word of your two-million-dollar demand was recorded, timestamped, and transmitted directly to the District Attorney's office five seconds ago."

"You monster!" Bernice spat, her face contorting into a terrifying mask of rage, saliva flying from her lips as she fought against the officers' iron grip. "You ungrateful, pathetic little worm! I gave you life! I raised you! And you trap your own mother for this little bitch?!"

She lunged toward Savannah, her sharp fingernails reaching out like claws.

"I SHOULD HAVE KILLED YOU THREE YEARS AGO!" Bernice screamed at the top of her lungs. "YOU TRASH! YOU DESTROYED MY FAMILY!"

Savannah didn't flinch. She sat perfectly still on the sofa, her hands gently resting over her pregnant belly, watching the woman who had tortured her for three years be forced down onto her knees on the marble floor.

CLICK. CLICK.

The heavy steel handcuffs locked tightly around Bernice’s wrists behind her back.

"You have the right to remain silent," Officer Thomas read flatly, hauling Bernice up from the floor by her arms. "Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law..."

"Christopher! Christopher, please!" Bernice began to sob hysterically as she was dragged backwards toward the elevator doors. "Don't let them take me! I’m sorry! I’m sorry, Christopher! I love you! I’m your mother!"

The elevator doors chimed, opened, and swallowed her whole, cutting off her shrill, desperate screaming as the cab descended toward the basement loading dock where two police cruisers were waiting.

The apartment fell into a profound, peaceful quiet.

Eleanor Vance turned to us, holding a tablet screen. "The Sacramento Police Department has already executed a simultaneous search and arrest warrant at Vanessa Miller’s condo in midtown. She was taken into custody ten minutes ago for corporate loan fraud, forgery, and conspiracy."

Savannah let out a long, slow breath. The tension that had held her shoulders tight for thirty-six months finally dissolved, leaving her body soft and relaxed.

She turned her head to look at me, a soft, genuine smile touching her lips despite the cut on her mouth.

"It’s over," she whispered.

"No, sweetie," I said, leaning down to kiss her forehead gently, holding her face in my hands. "It’s just beginning. We have a home to rebuild."
