Chapter 9 - The Dawn Over Long Island

By three o'clock that afternoon, the rain had finally cleared over Long Island, leaving bright golden sunlight streaming through the high arched windows of the Russo estate.

In the backyard garden, four-year-old Mia and Valentina were chasing a golden retriever puppy across the manicured green lawn, their bright laughter echoing through the crisp autumn air.

Sitting on a marble bench near the rose bushes was Clara, holding a tray with two cups of warm tea.

Beside her sat Lucia.

The little girl was dressed in a soft pink sweater, holding a small sketchbook on her lap, drawing a picture of a house with five bright yellow hearts above it.

Footsteps sounded on the stone path behind them.

Clara turned to see Dominic walking toward them. He had removed his heavy coat and suit jacket, wearing a simple white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms. The dark shadow of fury that had consumed him for fourteen months was entirely gone, replaced by a profound, peaceful stillness.

Lucia looked up from her sketchbook. When she saw her father, she didn't flinch or shrink back.

She set her crayons down, stood up from the bench, and ran toward him as fast as her small legs could carry her.

“Daddy!” she cried out.

Dominic dropped to his knees, opening his arms wide as Lucia slammed into his chest, wrapping her small arms tightly around his neck. Dominic pulled her close, burying his face in her hair, holding his eldest daughter like the precious treasure she was.

“I’m here, baby,” Dominic whispered, tears of joy streaming down his face. “Daddy’s here.”

Lucia pulled back slightly, looking into his eyes with a bright, innocent smile. “Did you make the bad men go away?”

Dominic wiped her tears gently with his thumb. “Yes, sweetheart. All the bad men are gone forever. No one is ever going to hurt our family again.”

Valentina and Mia came running over, giggling as they threw themselves into the group hug, piling onto their father in the grass. For the first time in fourteen months, the Russo mansion was filled with the sweet, unbreakable melody of three little girls laughing together in the sunlight.

Clara stood near the marble bench, watching the beautiful scene with a soft, warm smile.
