Chapter 5 - The Council of Wolves

At ten o'clock the following morning, the great glass conservatory on the eastern wing of the estate was transformed into a arena.

A massive mahogany conference table sat in the center of the room, surrounded by exotic palms and floor-to-ceiling glass walls overlooking the lake where Julian had nearly died twenty-four hours earlier.

Sitting around the table were twelve men and two women—the senior Capos of the Vescari crime syndicate.

Uncle Dominic sat at the far end, smoking a thick cigar, his heavy face scowling. Victoria sat to his right, wearing a sharp black suit and diamonds. Leo sat near the back, constantly checking his encrypted phone.

I stood directly behind Julian’s wheelchair, dressed in a sharp navy-blue dress suit provided by Julian's private tailor, holding an iPad containing the meeting agenda. I was no longer acting like an administrative temp; I was standing as his official right hand.

"This meeting is an insult!" Uncle Dominic barked, slamming his thick hand onto the table, sending ash flying from his cigar. "Julian! You almost drowned yesterday because your mind is slipping! You sit in that chair while our territory in South Chicago is being picked apart by the Moretti family!"

Julian sat at the head of the table, completely unbothered. He didn't raise his voice. He didn't flinch.

"My mind is perfectly clear, Uncle Dominic," Julian said smoothly. "My wheel brake was cut. It was an attempted assassination."

Murmurs rippled through the twelve Capos.

"Assassination?" Victoria scoffed, waving her hand dismissively. "Who would dare attack you on your own estate, brother? It was an accident! You lost control of your chair because your lower body is useless!"

I felt a surge of white-hot anger rise in my chest at her cruel words, but Julian merely smiled—a cold, terrifying razor blade of a smile.

"If it was an accident, Victoria," Julian purred, leaning forward in his chair, "then why did Marco's security team receive an encrypted broadcast on their tactical radios fifteen seconds before I fell?"

The entire conservatory went dead silent.

Leo’s head snapped up from his phone, his face turning slightly pale.

Julian tapped a button on his desk console. A speaker in the center of the table crackled to life, playing a recorded audio clip of a voice disguised by an electronic modulator:

"Stand down at the terrace. Do not engage. Let the water handle him."

The Capos gasped. Uncle Dominic’s cigar froze inches from his mouth.

"That message was broadcasted from an internal transmitter located inside this mansion," Julian revealed, his eyes slowly sweeping over the twelve faces at the table. "Someone in this room gave the order to let me die."

"This is outrageous!" Leo stood up, pointing a shaking finger at Julian. "You're playing fake audio logs to justify a purge! You're paranoid, Julian! You're unfit to rule!"

"Sit down, Leo," Julian commanded, his voice carrying the authority of a king.

"No! I won't sit down!" Leo yelled, turning to the other Capos. "Look at him! He trusts this temp girl—this nobody—over his own family! He gave her full security clearance yesterday! How do we know SHE didn't cut his brakes?!"

"Because she jumped in to pull him out while you stood there taking notes, Leo," I interrupted loudly, stepping out from behind Julian's chair, my voice echoing across the glass walls.

Leo glared at me with wild, vicious eyes. "Shut your mouth, girl! You're a fake! Your real name is Clara Miller! Your brother was a low-level accountant who died in a gutter!"

The room erupted into chaos. Capos began shouting, pointing, demanding answers.

Julian raised one single hand.

The entire room shut up instantly.

"Leo knows her real name," Julian said softly, a deadly smile gracing his lips. "Only... I never revealed Clara's real name to anyone in this family. I kept her file in my private, offline server."

Julian turned his head slowly toward his cousin.

"The only way you could possibly know her brother was Thomas Miller... is if you were the one who ordered his murder six months ago."
