Chapter 7 - The Unspoken Spark

By midnight, the basement interrogations were complete.

Leo had sung like a bird, revealing a massive network of corruption that stretched from the Chicago docks to three corrupt city judges.

I sat in Julian's private quarters on the third floor. Unlike the cold, mahogany-lined rooms downstairs, his bedroom was warm and modern, featuring floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the moonlit garden.

Julian sat in his armchair near the balcony, looking out at the night sky, a glass of bourbon resting in his hand.

I walked over, holding two warm mugs of tea, setting one on the small table beside him.

"You should sleep," I murmured softly. "You've been awake for thirty-six hours."

Julian didn't look away from the window. "When you spend two years expecting a bullet every time you close your eyes, sleep becomes a luxury you can't afford."

I sat on the velvet bench near his chair, wrapping my hands around my mug. "Your cousin is gone. The traitor inside your security team has been purged. You can breathe now, Julian."

Julian turned his head to look at me. The moonlight caught the sharp, aristocratic lines of his jaw and the deep, mysterious intensity of his dark eyes.

"I can breathe because of you, Clara," he said softly. "Six months ago, when your brother died, I thought I had failed him. I thought I was losing my grip on everything I built. Then you jumped into that water."

"I thought you were a monster when I got here," I admitted gently, looking into his eyes. "I thought you were cold, unfeeling, and ruthless."

"And now?" he asked, leaning slightly closer.

"Now I know you're just a man carrying the weight of an empire on his shoulders," I replied softly. "A man who gave his last lungful of air to a stranger at the bottom of a lake."

Julian set his glass down. He reached out, his long, warm fingers gently sliding up my neck, resting against my jawline. His touch sent a shiver of intense heat straight down my spine.

"I didn't give my air to a stranger, Clara," Julian whispered, his thumb lightly tracing my lower lip. "I gave it to the woman who brought me back to life."

My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. I didn't pull away. I leaned into his hand, looking down at his lips.

For a moment, the world outside—the mob war, the blood, the betrayal—faded into absolute insignificance. There was only Julian, his warm touch, and the electric tension pulling us together.

He leaned up slightly from his chair, pulling me down toward him, his lips lightly brushing mine in a delicate, reverent kiss that made my breath hitch in my throat.

It was sweet, intense, and filled with a raw, unspoken promise.

When he pulled back slightly, his dark eyes were burning with a fierce, protective fire.

"I won't let anyone hurt you, Clara," Julian promised, his voice thick with emotion. "Not the Morettis. Not my family. No one."
