Chapter 10 - The Sovereign and the Waitress

The rain outside the grand floor-to-ceiling windows of the estate had finally stopped, leaving a clear, dark sky filled with brilliant silver stars reflecting off the quiet waters of the harbor below.
Maeve stood on the stone balcony, leaning against the carved marble railing, a soft wool blanket wrapped around her shoulders against the cool midnight air. Below her, the vast estate was silent and secure, guarded by dozens of loyal men who walked the perimeter under the soft glow of garden lights.
She heard quiet footsteps behind her.
Arthur stepped out onto the balcony. He had removed his suit jacket, wearing only his dark vest and white dress shirt, the top two buttons unfastened. In his right hand, he held two crystal glasses filled with sparkling mineral water.
He walked over, handing one glass to her, leaning his broad hips against the marble railing beside her.
Brutus walked out behind him, laying his massive head down on Maeve's foot with a deep, contented sigh.
"The city is quiet now," Arthur said softly, looking out at the glittering lights of the skyline four miles away. "Vane's loyalists have been cleared out. The union funds are secure. The Fourth District has sent a formal apology and a pledge of non-interference."
Maeve took a small sip of the water, looking out at the city where she had spent seven years carrying coffee cups and scraping by on eight dollars an hour.
"And Carmichael’s Diner?" she asked, a faint smile touching her lips.
"Demolition starts on Monday," Arthur replied dryly. "I am building a modern community medical clinic on the site. Dr. Vance has agreed to serve as chief of staff."
Maeve looked up at him, her hazel eyes shining with genuine admiration. "You really don't do things by halves, do you, Arthur?"
"Never," Arthur murmured, turning his body to face her.
He reached out, his broad, calloused fingers gently tucked a strand of dark hair behind her ear, his thumb brushing over the soft skin of her cheek.
"Three days ago," Arthur said, his voice dropping into a deep, emotional register that made her heart flutter, "I was a dead man tied to an iron pipe in a filthy alley. I had accepted my fate. I believed the world was nothing more than blood, violence, and treachery."
He looked down into her eyes, his pale gray gaze burning with an intensity that took her breath away.
"Then a waitress with hazel eyes and a forty-dollar pair of ruined shoes walked around the dumpster," Arthur whispered. "You didn't just cut my dog free, Maeve. You brought me back to life."
Maeve reached up, placing her hand over his resting on her cheek, leaning her face into his broad palm.
"I didn't rescue a mafia boss, Arthur," Maeve whispered softly. "I rescued a man who was hurting. And a dog who needed a friend."
Arthur leaned down, his face inches from hers. "And what happens now, Maeve? You have a new life waiting for you. You can go anywhere in the world. I can give you a villa in Italy, a house in London, or a quiet farm in Vermont. Whatever you desire."
Maeve looked into his cold gray eyes, seeing the quiet vulnerability he hid from the rest of the world—a vulnerability he showed only to her.
"I don't want Italy," Maeve said firmly, her voice clear and unyielding. "I don't want London. And I definitely don't want a quiet farm."
Arthur’s eyebrow raised slightly. "Then what do you want?"
Maeve slid her arms around his neck, standing on her tiptoes, pressing her body close against his broad chest.
"I want to stay right here," Maeve whispered against his lips. "With the sovereign of the Fifth District. And his dog."

Arthur let out a low, deep laugh—a sound of pure, triumphant joy that echoed across the stone balcony—before pulling her tight into his arms, pressing his lips to hers in a deep, passionate kiss that sealed their fates together forever.
Below them, on the stone patio, Brutus let out a long, happy bark into the clear night sky, as the sovereign and the waitress stood together under the unbroken stars.
