Chapter 7 - The Shadows Gather

For thirty-six hours, Maeve’s tiny apartment became a fortress hidden in plain sight.

While Arthur rested, his powerful body slowly rebuilding its strength under the care of antibiotics provided by Dr. Vance, Maeve went about her routine as normally as possible. She called in sick to Carmichael’s Diner for her afternoon shift, claiming a severe case of the flu—a story Carmichael accepted with a grunt of annoyance before hanging up on her.

She spent the time cleaning her apartment, cooking simple chicken broth on her narrow stove, and tending to Brutus. The massive dog had become her silent shadow, following her from the kitchen to the living room, resting its broad head in her lap whenever she sat down.

Arthur spent most of the second day sitting at her small kitchen table, using a secure, encrypted satellite phone that Dr. Vance had delivered via a discreet courier early that morning.

Maeve watched him from the living room as he worked.

When Arthur spoke on that phone, he was no longer the quiet, injured man who had rested in her bed. He was the sovereign of the Fifth District. His voice was cold, razor-sharp, and delivered commands with a terrifying, calm precision that made the blood run cold in her veins.

"Is the vault secured?" Arthur rasped into the phone, his grey eye fixed on the rain outside the window. "...Good. Tell Marcus to hold his position at the docks. Do not move on the penthouse until I give the order. I want every rat inside that room before we close the trap."

He clicked the phone shut, setting it on the table beside a cup of tea Maeve had made for him.

"You're going back tonight," Maeve said softly, standing in the doorway.

Arthur looked up. The coldness in his face melted away slightly as he met her eyes.

"Yes," he said. "My lieutenants have gathered the remaining loyal captains. The man who betrayed me—a capo named Vane—has called a emergency council meeting at my estate tonight to officially declare himself the new head of the family."

"He thinks you're dead," Maeve noted.

"He does," Arthur said, a dark, dangerous smile touching his lips. "He is going to be exceptionally surprised when I walk into the boardroom."

He stood up from the table, moving with much more ease now. The color had returned to his face, his posture broad and commanding once again.

He walked over to where she stood, looking down at her.

"I have arranged for a car to pick you up at eight o'clock tonight," Arthur said quietly. "A private transport will take you and Brutus to a secure house in upstate New York. You will stay there for three days until the city is fully secured."

Maeve looked at him, surprised. "Upstate? Arthur, I have a job. I have rent—"

"Carmichael’s Diner no longer exists to you, Maeve," Arthur said firmly, placing his broad hands on her shoulders. "I bought the building three hours ago through an offshore shell company. Carmichael was fired twenty minutes ago."

Maeve stared at him, her mouth opening in sheer shock. "You... you bought the diner?!"

"The grease smell was ruining your hair," Arthur said flatly, without a hint of a smile. "And the owner was rude to my host."

"You are completely insane," Maeve gasped, half-laughing, half-horrified. "You can't just buy a business because you don't like the owner!"

"I can," Arthur said quietly. "I can buy the building, I can buy the street, and I can buy the entire neighborhood if it keeps you safe."

He stepped closer, his thumb resting gently against the side of her jaw, feeling the rapid flutter of her pulse.

"When I walk into that boardroom tonight," Arthur whispered, his voice deep and thick with emotion, "blood will be spilled. Vane and his men will realize they lost the moment they failed to check the alley. But my only concern... the only thing that has kept me awake for thirty-six hours... is ensuring that no harm comes to the woman who cut my dog free."

Maeve looked into his pale gray eyes, feeling a strange, powerful heat rising in her chest. She realized with a sudden, breathtaking clarity that she didn't want him to walk out that door. She didn't want to go back to her quiet, invisible, lonely life.

"Arthur..." she whispered, reaching up to lay her palm against his chest, right over his beating heart. "Be careful."

Arthur closed his eyes for a brief second, leaning his forehead gently against hers.

"I am always careful, Maeve," he murmured. "Except when it comes to you."

Before she could answer, the secure satellite phone on the table let out a low, vibrating buzz.

Arthur pulled back, picking up the phone. He clicked it open, listening for three seconds before his face hardened into a mask of pure, murderous iron.

"What?" Arthur growled into the receiver.

Maeve watched his gray eye widen slightly, a cold, terrifying stillness settling over his entire frame.

He lowered the phone slowly, looking across the room at the rear fire escape window.

"They found the Honda," Arthur whispered, his voice dropping into a register that made the hair on Maeve’s arms stand up. "Vane’s enforcers just pulled into the alley downstairs."
