Chapter 2 - LOCKDOWN AT WESTCHESTER

By two in the morning, the estate felt less like a luxury mansion and more like an armed fortress under siege.

Heavy iron security shutters had descended over every window on the ground floor. Forty armed guards in dark suits patrolled the perimeter, while Marcus, Dominic’s head of security, oversaw a complete audit of every security camera feed from the past seventy-two hours.

I sat on the edge of the bed in my quarter-suite in the staff wing, watching Lily sleep peacefully under her floral blanket. Her white sneakers, still smudged with chocolate frosting, rested near the doorway.

A quiet knock echoed against the heavy oak door.

I opened it to find Dominic standing in the hallway. He had discarded his tuxedo jacket, unbuttoned his collar, and rolled his white shirt sleeves up to his forearms. He looked exhausted, yet the air around him radiated a quiet, dangerous energy.

"May I come in?" he asked.

"Of course, Mr. Moretti."

He walked in, his heavy footsteps muffled by the carpet. He stopped near Lily's bed and looked down at her for a long, silent moment.

"She's sleeping well," he noted softly.

"She doesn't realize what happened," I replied, folding my hands nervously in front of my apron. "She just thought someone was messing with Ethan's cake."

Dominic turned to look at me. "She saw something my security team failed to catch on twelve separate cameras. The killer knew the blind spots in the service corridors."

My throat felt tight. "How is that possible? Marcus checks those cameras every week."

"Because whoever did this didn't just break in," Dominic said, his voice dropping into a dark, gravelly register. "They were given access. They knew the shift changes, they knew the kitchen schedule, and they knew Ethan's medical history."

He pulled a folded piece of paper from his pocket and laid it on my small wooden desk.

"What is this?" I asked.

"A formal change in your employment contract," Dominic replied. "As of tonight, you are no longer the head housekeeper. You and Lily are moving to the master wing."

I blinked, thoroughly confused. "The master wing? Sir, I don't understand—"

"Ethan refuses to eat anything that doesn't come from your hands," Dominic explained, staring into my eyes with an intensity that made it hard to breathe. "He trusts you. And Lily is the only witness who can identify the man in the cold room."

"Mr. Moretti, I'm just a housekeeper," I stammered, stepping back. "I clean rooms, I manage inventory. I can't live in the master wing."

"You saved my family tonight, Maya," Dominic said, stepping closer until he was standing directly in front of me. "Which means whoever tried to kill my son now views your daughter as a threat. You are not safe in the staff quarters."

He reached out, his thumb gently catching a stray lock of hair that had fallen across my face, tucking it behind my ear with unexpected gentleness.

May you like

"Under my roof, in my wing, no one can touch you," he murmured. "Packing starts at seven in the morning. That isn't a request, Maya."

Before I could reply, he turned and left the room, leaving me alone in the dim light with the sudden realization that my quiet life was over.
