Chapter 10 - The House Under the Sun

Murphy froze, staring at Allie as her words settled into his chest like a warm, steady anchor.

For twenty years, he had lived in a world of steel, blood, and quiet isolation. He had built walls higher than any estate fence to keep the world out, believing that power was the only thing that could keep a man safe in a dark world.

He looked down at Lily, who was now holding her stuffed rabbit up toward him, giggling happily as a yellow butterfly fluttered across the grass.

"Are you sure, Allie?" Murphy asked, his deep voice carrying a rare, vulnerable softness. "My life... my world... it isn't simple. There will always be shadows."

Allie reached out, her fingers gently brushing against the scarred skin of his jawline. Her touch was warm, confident, and completely devoid of fear.

"I spent three years living in terror of the shadows, Murphy," Allie said softly, looking directly into his eyes. "You showed me that shadows don't matter when you're standing next to the man who holds the light."

Murphy reached up, covering her hand with his broad, calloused palm, holding her fingers against his cheek.

"Then you stay," Murphy promised softly, his voice an unshakeable oath. "Both of you. For as long as you want."

"Forever," Lily chimed in from the grass, proudly holding up a brand-new drawing she had just finished.

Murphy and Allie both looked down at the small piece of paper.

It was a drawing of the Moretti estate. The tall brick walls were gone, replaced by colorful flower beds and green trees. Standing in front of the house were three figures holding hands: a small girl with a pink dress, a smiling woman with long dark hair, and a tall man with a red line along his jaw.

And above the house, spanning across the entire top of the page in bright, brilliant crayon ink, was a massive, radiant yellow sun.

Murphy smiled—a genuine, warm, handsome smile that completely erased the coldness of his past.

He reached down, lifting Lily easily into his left arm, while reaching out with his right hand to wrap his strong arm around Allie's waist, pulling her close against his side.

Together, they stood on the sunlit terrace, looking out over the endless ocean, safe, unbroken, and finally home.
