Chapter 2 - The Whispers of a Syndicate

The name hung in the quiet room like a suffocating blanket.
For fourteen months, Allie had moved between cheap motels, temporary dishwashing jobs, and false identities across three states, always leaving before anyone could remember Lily’s face or notice the way she flinched at the sound of heavy boots. She had taken the housekeeper position at the Moretti estate under the name Sarah Miller, believing the vast, heavily fortified estate was large enough to hide inside without ever drawing the attention of its infamous owner.
"How... how do you know that name?" Allie gasped, her hands clutching the thin bedsheet.
Murphy stepped closer, pulling a wooden chair from the corner and sitting down. He motioned for Dr. Leon to step outside to give them privacy.
"Victor Sosa is currently expanding his narcotics and extortion networks up from the south," Murphy explained calmly. "He's been trying to buy leverage in my city for six months. Three days ago, my intelligence team picked up an inquiry on a private bulletin board. Sosa put a two-hundred-thousand-dollar bounty on a woman matching your exact description, along with a child named Lily."
Allie buried her face in her trembling hands, her shoulders shaking with silent, desperate sobs.
"He's never going to stop," she wept softly. "He has money, he has men in the police departments... he bought transit clerks, employment agencies, even public school registries. Every time I think I'm safe, someone sells my location."
Murphy looked at the small child sitting quietly on the bed. Lily was watching him without fear now, her eyes curious.
"Sosa is getting closer," Murphy acknowledged. "My contacts report he traced your false social security number to a staffing agency in South Boston yesterday morning. He knows you're in the city."
"Then I have to run," Allie insisted, her voice rising in panic as she tried to swing her legs over the side of the bed. "I have two hundred dollars saved in my bag. I can take a night bus to Maine—"
"You wouldn't make it to the state line," Murphy cut in, his voice firm and grounding. "Sosa's men monitor every bus depot and train station within fifty miles. The moment you step onto a public platform, you'll be spotted."
"Then what am I supposed to do?" Allie cried out, looking up at the man whose reputation brought terror to the streets of Chicago and Boston alike. "He wants to destroy me, Mr. Moretti! He wants Lily!"
Murphy stood up, buttoning his jacket. His scar caught the dim light of the bedside lamp.
"Victor Sosa believes he is the most dangerous predator in New England," Murphy said coldly. "He doesn't realize he's hunting in my woods. You stay in these quarters. You do not leave the third floor. My men will secure the perimeter."
"Why?" Allie whispered, staring at him in bewilderment. "Why would Murphy Moretti protect a fugitive housekeeper and her child? What do you want from me?"
Murphy paused at the doorway, looking back at the young mother and her barefoot daughter.
"Because Victor Sosa thinks money can buy everything in this city," Murphy replied quietly. "And I don't like arrogant men operating on my turf."
What Allie did not know was that Murphy Moretti did not protect people with grand speeches or public declarations. He protected them by becoming silent—and letting his enemies grow confident enough to expose themselves completely.
Outside in the hallway, Murphy met his second-in-command, a broad-shouldered man named Dominic.
"Boss," Dominic whispered, handing Murphy a secure satellite tablet. "We tapped Sosa's local communications. He just paid twenty thousand dollars to a clerk at the municipal employment office. He knows she's working on the North Shore."
"Order the perimeter guards to loosen the secondary patrol grid on the eastern fence line," Murphy commanded calmly.

Dominic blinked in surprise. "Boss? You want us to leave a gap?"
"I want Victor Sosa to believe he has found an unguarded road," Murphy said, his eyes darkening like a storm over the ocean. "And I want him to bring every man he has."
