Chapter 6 - The Secondary Wire

Adrian knelt beside the grey pelican case, his tactical light illuminating the thick copper strands running into the sealed housing.

"Adrian..." Evelyn cried softly, her voice rising in panic as he reached toward the box. "Don't touch it! The recording said it has an anti-tamper motion sensor! If the casing moves half an inch, it triggers!"

"I'm not moving the box, Evelyn," Adrian said calmly, his voice completely steady, devoid of any panic. "Look at me."

Evelyn turned her pale, dirty face toward him, her breathing ragged.

"Look into my eyes," Adrian instructed, his pale grey gaze holding hers with an intense, unyielding focus. "I have spent twenty years surrounded by men who wanted to destroy me. I am still standing here. You are still standing here. We are going to walk out of this basement together."

"Adrian... the timer is at less than two minutes..." she sobbed.

"Listen to me," Adrian continued, reaching into his inner jacket pocket and pulling out a small, silver folding pocket knife with a two-inch carbon steel blade. "I am going to cut the zip-ties behind your back. You are going to stand up, step over the wires, and walk toward the door."

"No!" Evelyn gasped, shaking her head frantically. "If I move away from the pillar, the weight-pressure sensor under my seat will release!"

Adrian froze, his eyes dropping down to the rough concrete floor beneath her legs.

Tucked beneath her thighs was a flat, quarter-inch steel pressure plate connected to two thin silver wires that ran directly into the pelican case.

Whoever had built the device had created a triple-redundant trap: a countdown timer, a motion-sensitive casing, and a dead-man's weight-release plate beneath her seat.

If she stood up, the plate opened. If he moved the box, the mercury switch closed. If the timer reached zero, the circuit completed.

"Adrian... please," Evelyn whispered, tears streaming freely down her cheeks as she looked at him with pure, selfless love. "Go away. Run out of the building. You have ninety seconds... please, Adrian... don't die in this place because of me..."

Adrian looked at her face. He saw the dark bruises on her wrists, the dirt on her cheek, the sheer, beautiful courage of a woman who was offering her life to save his.

He didn't run toward the door. He didn't step back.

He sat down directly on the cold, damp concrete floor beside her, crossing his legs, placing his hands on his knees.

"Adrian?!" Evelyn gasped, staring at him in utter shock. "What are you doing?!"

"I'm not leaving you, Evelyn," Adrian said softly, a quiet, gentle smile touching the corners of his mouth—the first real smile she had seen on his face in months. "I told you four years ago when I gave you that watch: Without Any Fear. I meant every word."

"Adrian, you're crazy! You're going to die!" she screamed softly, trying to push herself away from him, but the bound zip-ties kept her pinned against the concrete pillar.

"If this room goes," Adrian said, looking directly into her eyes as the red LED numbers dropped past the sixty-second mark, "we go together. But no one takes you from me in the dark."
