Chapter 7 - The Mastermind's Voice

From the high corner of the concrete ceiling, a small, hidden speaker suddenly crackled to life with a harsh, static-filled hiss.
"Fascinating," a distorted, synthetic voice echoed through the cold basement room. "The great Adrian Vale... kneeling in the dust like a common beggar."
Adrian didn't look up at the speaker. He kept his eyes locked onto Evelyn’s face, holding her gaze, feeling her hand trembling against his knee as he squeezed her arm.
"Who are you?" Adrian asked, his voice calm, clear, and resonant.
"Does it matter?" the voice rasped through the static. "Ten years ago, you executed a corporate restructuring of the Meridian Shipping Group. You destroyed three hundred pension funds. You drove four men to take their own lives in one winter. You moved on, richer, more powerful, untouched by the wreckage you left behind."
Adrian’s mind raced through the financial ledger of his past. Meridian Shipping. 2016. A hostile takeover engineered alongside the European investment consortium. The primary director had been a man named Victor Mercer.
"Mercer," Adrian said flatly.
"Victor Mercer was my father," the voice replied, the synthetic filter failing to hide the deep, murderous rage vibrating beneath the words. "He spent six years in federal prison while you sat in your Wall Street penthouse drinking fifty-year-old scotch. He died in a state hospital ward three months ago... alone, broke, and forgotten."

"So you spent three months tracking my life," Adrian said, his tone entirely devoid of fear or apology. "You found the only thing in this city that I valued. You built a bomb in a Red Hook basement to make me pay for your father's failure."
"My father didn't fail!" the voice screamed over the speaker. "He was destroyed by a monster! And now, the monster gets to watch the only thing he loves torn into pieces before he burns!"

"Adrian!" Evelyn cried out, her eyes wide with terror as she pulled at her bound wrists, her body shaking hysterically against the iron pillar. "He's going to do it! Run!"
Adrian didn't move an inch. He reached out, taking her trembling, bound hands into his broad palms, pulling her as close to his chest as the plastic ties would allow.
"Look at me, Evelyn," Adrian whispered softly against her ear, smelling the faint, familiar scent of her hair beneath the dirt and smoke. "Look at me and don't close your eyes."
