Chapter 5 - The Snake at the Table

The opportunity arrived three days later in the form of a formal corporate dinner at the Vance estate.
Ethan and Chloe were hosting an executive delegation from Vitalis Health to finalize the preliminary merger contracts before the public announcement. The dinner was held in the formal dining room—a grand space featuring a long mahogany table, crystal chandeliers, and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the estate's formal gardens.
Because Richard’s presence was required to maintain the illusion of a docile, present founder for the corporate guests, Ethan ordered me to wheel him to the head of the table.
"Keep him quiet, Maya," Ethan warned me in the hallway before the guests arrived, adjusting his silk tie. "If he starts making incoherent noises or getting agitated, pump him with his liquid sedative immediately. We have high-value investors here tonight."
"Understood, Mr. Vance," I said, keeping my eyes respectfully lowered.
I pushed Richard’s motorized wheelchair to the end of the table. He sat slumped forward, his chin resting near his chest, his eyes dull and unfocused—a masterclass in acting that he had perfected over eight grueling months.
At seven o'clock, the guests arrived.
I stood quietly in the corner of the room in my crisp navy scrubs, holding a tray with Richard’s medical supplies, acting as the invisible, obedient caregiver.
The heavy oak doors opened, and Ethan led four executives into the dining room.
Walking directly behind Ethan, wearing a tailored charcoal suit bought with money he didn't have, was Miguel. Standing beside him, her hand slipped possessively through his arm, was Valerie—wearing a diamond necklace that cost more than my entire annual salary used to be.
I kept my face completely expressionless, my body still as a statue in the shadows near the sideboard.
Miguel was laughing at something Ethan said, his posture radiating the smug, arrogant confidence of a man who believed he had finally arrived at the top of the world. He pulled out a chair for Valerie, then sat down directly across from Richard.
"It’s an honor to be here, Ethan," Miguel said, unfolding his linen napkin. "The board at Vitalis is thrilled with the progress of the preliminary audit. Once the conservatorship hearing passes next week, we can execute the wire transfer within forty-eight hours."
"Richard has always been... generous with his corporate vision," Ethan said with a sickening, smooth smile, glancing casually at his "paralyzed" brother at the head of the table. "He would be proud to know Vance BioMedical is in such capable hands."
Valerie looked toward Richard, a slight smirk playing on her lips. "It must be so tragic for him. To build an empire, only to end up... like that. Does he even understand what we're saying, nurse?"
She was looking directly at me.
Miguel turned his head to look at the caregiver in the corner.
The moment his eyes met mine, his smile froze. The color drained from his face so fast it looked as though he had been struck by lightning. He choked on his water, coughing violently into his napkin.
"Maya...?" Miguel gasped, his voice squeaking in utter disbelief.
The room went quiet. Ethan frowned, looking between Miguel and me. "You know Richard’s caregiver, Miguel?"
I stepped out of the shadows, holding my notepad, my voice clear, professional, and entirely unbothered.
"Mr. Torres is my ex-husband, Mr. Vance," I said smoothly. "Our divorce was finalized three weeks ago."
Valerie’s eyes widened, her posture instantly stiffening into defensive hostility. "What is she doing here? Ethan, why is she working in this house?"
"She was hired through the premier agency in Chicago," Ethan said, waving a dismissive hand. "She has impeccable credentials in neurological trauma care. Is there a problem, Miguel?"
Miguel was staring at me, his eyes darting frantically from my clean scrubs to Richard’s slumped form, then back to my face. He looked terrified—not because he thought I knew about the conspiracy, but because his fragile corporate ego was horrified that his ex-wife was standing in the room where he was trying to play the high-society executive.
"No... no problem," Miguel stammered, sweating under his collar. "It's just... surprising."
"A woman has to make a living, Miguel," I said, offering him a cool, razor-sharp smile that made his skin crawl. "As Ofelia so kindly reminded me... it's brutal to survive alone."
Throughout the six-course dinner, Miguel couldn't eat. Every time he raised his glass, his hand shook. Every time he spoke about the valuation metrics of Vance BioMedical, my presence in the corner hung over him like an executioner’s axe.
At eight-thirty, dessert was served.
I executed the plan.
I walked over to the side table, picked up a heavy silver water pitcher filled with ice water, and approached Ethan to refill his glass.
As I stepped behind Ethan’s chair, Richard—sitting slumped to his left—executed a minute, invisible movement. His left foot hooked subtly behind the leg of my chair, creating a sudden, deliberate obstruction.
I played my part instantly. I stumbled, letting out a sharp gasp, and "accidentally" tipped the heavy silver pitcher forward.
A gallon of ice-cold water poured directly over Ethan’s chest, soaking his silk tie, his tailored suit jacket, and his lapels.
"DAMN IT!" Ethan roared, jumping out of his chair, throwing his napkin to the floor. "You clumsy idiot!"
"I am so sorry, Mr. Vance!" I cried, grabbing a stack of cloth napkins, stepping in close, frantically dabbing at his soaked jacket. "My foot caught on the rug—let me help you!"
In the chaotic three seconds of frantic wiping and apologizing, my hands moved with forensic precision. My fingers slipped into Ethan’s wet breast pocket, hooked the heavy metal hardware keycard, and slid it seamlessly into the wide cuff of my scrub sleeve.
"Get away from me!" Ethan snarled, shoving my hands aside. "Chloe, get this incompetent fool out of my sight! She’s fired!"
"Ethan, calm down," Chloe barked, stepping forward. "She’s the only nurse who knows how to handle Richard’s night routine!"
"I don't care! Send her back to her room!" Ethan stormed out of the dining room to change his clothes.
I backed away, bowing my head, keeping my hands tucked neatly into my pockets.
As I turned to wheel Richard out of the room, I caught Miguel watching me from across the table. His eyes were narrow, filled with a sudden, suspicious calculation.
May you like
He knew me. He knew I had never been clumsy in my life.
I didn't care. The keycard was heavy against my palm.
