Chapter 7 - The Trap Opens

At eight o'clock the following morning, the storm had passed, leaving behind a crisp, sunny autumn sky over Lake Michigan.

The formal conservatory of the Vance estate was filled with light.

Ethan Vance sat at the head of a long glass table, surrounded by his legal team, Dr. Harrison, and two court-appointed representatives from the Cook County Probate Division.

On the table sat the final conservatorship documents—the legal instruments that would declare Richard Vance permanently mentally incompetent, stripped of his voting shares, and placed under Ethan’s absolute financial guardianship.

Sitting across the room, wrapped in a blanket in his motorized wheelchair, was Richard. I stood beside him, holding his vitals log, looking like the picture of an obedient caregiver.

Sitting near the door, his face pale, a massive dark bruise blooming along his jaw from where I had slammed him onto the desk, was Miguel. Beside him stood Valerie and the CEO of Vitalis Health.

Miguel kept his eyes glued to the floor, refusing to look at me, his body trembling with an uncontrollable, nervous energy. He hadn't told Ethan about the midnight encounter—he was too terrified that admitting he had let his ex-wife knock him out in the study would ruin his credibility before the contracts were signed.

"We are ready to proceed," Ethan announced, adjusting his cuffs, offering a pleasant smile to the probate judge. "As you can see from Dr. Harrison’s extensive neurological reports, my brother Richard has suffered catastrophic, irreversible brain trauma. He is entirely non-verbal, non-functional, and incapable of managing his personal or corporate affairs."

"Is this correct, Dr. Harrison?" the judge asked, looking over her reading glasses at the neurologist.

"Regrettably, yes, Your Honor," Dr. Harrison said, smoothly shuffling a stack of forged medical files. "Richard’s motor cortex and frontal lobes show severe, permanent degeneration. He requires 24-hour physical care and has zero cognitive awareness of his surroundings."

"Very well," the judge said, picking up her pen. "Under the provisions of the Illinois Probate Act, I am prepared to sign the emergency conservatorship order—"

"I wouldn't sign that if I were you, Judge," a voice rang out.

The voice didn't come from a lawyer. It didn't come from the doorway.

It came from the wheelchair.

The room went dead silent. It was as if time itself had stopped.

Ethan froze, his pen hovering two inches above the paper. Dr. Harrison dropped his reading glasses onto the table. Miguel let out a tiny, whimpering sound near the back door.

Richard Vance slowly pushed the heavy wool blanket off his lap.

He didn't hesitate. He didn't falter.

He stood up.

He walked three steady, powerful steps forward, stopping directly across the glass table from his brother. He stood six feet tall, his posture immaculate, his dark eyes burning with an absolute, terrifying authority.

"What... what is this...?" Ethan stammered, his face turning the color of chalk as he backed out of his chair, nearly knocking it over. "Richard... you... you're paralyzed..."

"I was never paralyzed, Ethan," Richard said, his baritone voice filling the conservatory like thunder. "I survived your assassination attempt eight months ago. And I spent every day since watching you steal from my company, poison my body, and sell my life's work to corporate scavengers."

"This is impossible!" Dr. Harrison yelled, standing up defensively. "He’s having a spastic neurological episode! Guards!"

"Sit down, Harrison!" Richard commanded with such fierce power that the doctor instantly collapsed back into his chair.

Richard reached into his jacket pocket, pulled out a sleek silver flash drive, and tossed it onto the glass table directly in front of the probate judge.

"On that drive, Your Honor," Richard said calmly, "you will find the unredacted digital logs stolen from my private safe last night. You will find eight months of bank transfers from Ethan Vance to Dr. Harrison to forge my medical records. You will find the chemical analysis of the liquid sedatives my caregiver Maya uncovered—sedatives designed to slowly destroy my brain."

The judge picked up the drive, her eyes wide with shock, looking at Ethan with disgust. "Is this true?"

"He's lying!" Ethan screamed, turning to Chloe, panic completely breaking his suave composure. "He's insane! Call security!"

"Security isn't coming, Ethan," I spoke up, stepping forward beside Richard.

The double glass doors of the conservatory swung open.

A dozen armed federal agents flooded into the room, their vests clearly stamped with FBI / FINANCIAL CRIMES DIVISION, led by two Cook County prosecutors.

"Ethan Vance! Dr. Harrison!" the lead agent announced, pulling out a stack of federal arrest warrants. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, wire fraud, corporate embezzlement, and illegal distribution of controlled substances!"

Handcuffs clicked into place before Ethan could even speak. Dr. Harrison was dragged out of his chair, weeping silently.

Ethan looked at his brother as the agents forced his arms behind his back. "Richard... please... I'm your brother..."

"You died to me on Interstate 94, Ethan," Richard said coldly, turning his back on him as the agents dragged Ethan and his wife out of the room.
