Chapter 10 - The New Order

Three months later.
The morning sun was rising clear and brilliant over the skyline, washing the floor-to-ceiling windows of the Voss Tower in warm gold. The city below was humming with life, traffic flowing smoothly across the bridges, the docks operating at peak capacity under new, streamlined leadership.
On the forty-second floor, the outer reception area had been completely redesigned. Where a simple secretarial desk had once stood, there was now a sleek, frosted-glass partition leading to a secondary suite of executive offices bearing the silver lettering: Voss Strategic Risk Management.
Inside her broad new office, Evelyn Hart stood by the window, looking down at the city. She wore a perfectly tailored dark gray pantsuit, her blonde hair pulled back into an elegant knot. Her wrist had fully healed, the bruises long gone, leaving only a small, almost invisible scar near her lip—a quiet badge of honor from a night that changed everything.
A soft knock sounded at her door.
Marcus, dressed in a sharp black suit, stepped into the room holding a leather-bound briefing folder.
"Miss Hart," Marcus said, his tone carrying the deep, genuine respect he reserved for only two people in the entire city. "The intelligence reports from the European maritime unions just came in. Malcolm Dane’s former associates in Marseilles are trying to move into our shipping lanes."
Evelyn turned around, taking the folder from his hand with a swift, confident motion. She flipped it open, her sharp gray eyes scanning the financial data and ship registry numbers in seconds.
"Tell Thomas to hold the cargo at port," Evelyn instructed smoothly, closing the folder with a crisp snap. "Draft a freeze order on their primary letters of credit through our Zurich holding company. If they want to negotiate for those shipping lanes, they come to this office by Friday morning. Not to Malcolm’s old street lieutenants."
Marcus smiled faintly, bowing his head slightly. "Consider it done, boss."
As Marcus turned and walked out, the heavy oak connecting door between her suite and Adrian’s main office clicked open.
Adrian Voss stepped through, wearing a dark blue bespoke suit, holding a silver tray with a single porcelain mug resting on it.
"Your morning update was late by three minutes," Adrian said, his voice deep and smooth as he walked over and set the coffee mug on her polished glass desk.
Evelyn picked up the mug, taking a small sip. It was hot, rich, perfectly brewed, with a touch of cream—exactly how she preferred it.
"I was reviewing the Marseilles file," she said, looking up at him with a spark of wit in her eyes. "Besides, I believe making the CEO wait three minutes builds character."
Adrian laughed softly, leaning against the edge of her desk, looking down at her with an warmth he no longer bothered to hide.
"The city is quiet today," Adrian remarked, looking out at the glittering harbor. "The dock union signed the new ten-year contract this morning. No protests. No threats."
"That's because they know who is running the numbers now," Evelyn said, walking over to stand beside him at the window, their shoulders lightly brushing together.
For four years, Adrian had lived in a cold, paranoid world where loyalty was bought, survival was temporary, and betrayal lurked behind every closed door. But standing here now, looking out over his vast empire with the woman who had fought through violence, deceit, and blood to stand beside him, he knew the rules of the game had permanently shifted.
He wasn't fighting the storm alone anymore. He had found the eye.
"What's our next move, Miss Hart?" Adrian asked softly, turning his head to look at her profile bathed in the golden morning light.
May you like
Evelyn smiled—a sharp, brilliant, unapologetic expression that belonged to the ruler of a new order.
"We build," she said softly. "And we make sure nobody ever forgets who we are."
