Chapter 9 - The Aftermath

By 4:00 A.M., the storm had finally passed over the city, leaving the streets washed clean, glistening black under the soft glow of pre-dawn streetlights.
The executive floor of Voss Tower was silent once again. The police had come and gone through the private subterranean entrance, taking Julian Vance into custody without incident or public spectacle. Malcolm Dane’s empire had disintegrated in a single night—his lieutenants arrested, his assets frozen, his dockland territory surrendered back to Adrian’s control without a single innocent bystander hearing a gunshot.
In the corner office on the forty-second floor, the heavy oak doors were closed.
Adrian sat behind his desk, his dark coat thrown over the back of his chair, his white shirt sleeves rolled up to his elbows. A crystal decanter of scotch sat open between two heavy glasses.
Evelyn sat in the leather armchair opposite him, leaning her head back against the cushion, looking utterly drained of energy. Her black coat was unbuttoned, her right hand resting carefully in her dark wrist brace.
Adrian poured two fingers of scotch into each glass, leaning forward to hand one to her.
"Julian is officially in federal custody," Adrian said, his voice quiet in the room. "He signed a full confession detailing Malcolm’s extortion attempt. His daughter’s medical file was transferred to the Sloan Kettering Foundation in New York twenty minutes ago. She will receive the best treatment available."
Evelyn took the glass, her fingers brushing against his. "Thank you, Adrian."
"Don't thank me," Adrian said, taking a slow sip of his drink. "You were right. Malcolm used his desperation against him. Ending Julian’s life wouldn't have brought anything back. This was... the better resolution."
Evelyn turned her head to look at him through the dim light of the office. "You're changing, Mr. Voss."
Adrian let out a low, dark laugh, staring down at the amber scotch in his glass. "No, Evelyn. I'm not changing. I'm simply adapting to my new head of intelligence."
Silence stretched between them—not the heavy, nervous silence of employer and employee, but a deep, shared quiet forged in the fires of mutual survival.
"You can't go back to sitting outside my door," Adrian said after a moment, looking up to lock eyes with her. "You know that, don't you?"
"I suppose my typing speed will be compromised with this wrist brace anyway," she noted dryly, a faint smile playing at the corner of her lips.
"I’m setting up a new subsidiary," Adrian explained, leaning forward on his elbows. "Voss Logistics and Risk Assessment. Clean on the surface, sovereign underneath. You will run it. You'll have your own budget, your own staff, and your own field teams."
Evelyn studied his face, seeing the absolute sincerity and respect in his dark eyes. For four years, she had watched him run an empire from six feet away. Now, he was offering her half of the kingdom.
"Under one condition," Evelyn said softly.
Adrian raised an eyebrow. "You're making conditions now?"
"I still get to order your stationery," she said, her gray eyes dancing with subtle humor. "And nobody else makes your coffee."
Adrian stared at her for a long second before a genuine, breathtaking smile broke across his rugged features—a sight so rare that even his closest lieutenants had only seen it a handful of times in a decade.

"Agreed," Adrian said, raising his crystal glass toward her. "To new arrangements."
Evelyn raised her glass, clinking it gently against his. "To new arrangements."
