Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary in the Pines

Thirty miles north of Denver, hidden in the dense pine forests near Estes Park, sat a cozy wooden cabin surrounded by six acres of private land. The cabin belonged to Claire’s late grandmother, Clara, who had left the deed exclusively to Claire in her will—a property Evan had consistently dismissed as a useless, dilapidated piece of real estate not worth selling.
It was far from dilapidated. Over the past six months, Claire had secretly hired a local contractor to renovate the interior, install a backup generator, stock the pantry with emergency supplies, and set up a state-of-the-art satellite internet system. It was her sanctuary, built out of an instinct she hadn't fully understood until last night.
The driver helped her carry her bag up the snow-dusted wooden steps. Claire tipped him generously, watched the car drive away down the narrow dirt trail, and unlocked the heavy cedar door.
Inside, the cabin smelled of fresh pine, cedar wood, and dried lavender. A large stone fireplace dominated the living room, and high windows looked out over the sweeping, white expanse of the Rocky Mountains.
Claire set her bag down and walked into the small, warm kitchen. She turned on the electric kettle, poured herself a fresh glass of water, and took her morning vitamins. Her body was exhausted, her lower back aching from the stress of the night, but her mind was sharper than it had been in years.
She opened her medical binder and placed a call to her obstetrician, Dr. Aris Thorne, a trusted woman who operated an independent maternal clinic in Boulder.
"Dr. Thorne," Claire said when the physician answered her private line. "It's Claire Bennett."
"Claire? Merry Christmas. Is everything okay? Are you having contractions?"
"No contractions," Claire said calmly. "But I have relocated. I am no longer living with Evan. I need to update my confidential patient profile immediately. Under no circumstances is Evan Bennett—or anyone representing his firm—to be given information about my medical status, my location, or the birth of my daughter."
There was a brief pause on the line. Dr. Thorne was a professional who had seen her share of difficult marital separations. "I understand completely, Claire. I'll update your file with a protective red flag right now. Only my direct team will have access. How are your blood pressure numbers?"
"A bit high this morning, but I'm monitoring it," Claire replied. "I'll see you for my thirty-six-week checkup on Tuesday."
"Stay off your feet, drink plenty of fluids, and call me immediately if you feel any pressure changes," Dr. Thorne instructed warmly. "You're doing great, Claire."
After hanging up, Claire sat near the fireplace with a warm blanket wrapped around her shoulders. She turned on her laptop and booted up a secure VPN.
It was time to take a closer look at Evan's business.
For years, Evan had managed Bennett Development Group with an iron fist, portraying himself as a genius real estate mogul conquering the Colorado luxury market. But Claire knew how real estate worked. Projects like the Aspen resort required immense liquidity, liquid cash that Evan's firm hadn't possess six months ago.
Using her forensic access codes, Claire pulled up the public land registry and corporate filings for the Aspen project. Within twenty minutes, her sharp eyes caught the anomaly.
The primary lender for the Aspen project wasn't a bank. It was a shell company registered in Delaware called Lumina Investments. And the sole managing director listed on Lumina's confidential registration charter was Mallory Pierce.
Claire leaned back against her armchair, a cold smile touching her lips.

Evan hadn't just been sleeping with his vice president of finance. He had been using her to funnel offshore capital into his failing development projects to cover up massive operational losses.
Mallory wasn't just his mistress. She was his financial lifeline. And Evan was caught right in the middle of a trap of his own making.
