Chapter 5 - The Eviction of Vanessa Cole

The penthouse at The Lumina on 4th Street boasted floor-to-ceiling windows, private elevator access, and white marble counters that I had paid for out of my inheritance.
At 9:00 AM, the private elevator chimed.
The doors slid open to reveal not David with flight tickets, but two uniformed county deputies, an emergency court-appointed receiver named Gerald, and me.
Vanessa Cole was standing near the center island of the kitchen, surrounded by three sleek silver rimowa suitcases. She was wearing a beige cashmere sweater, white silk trousers, and the $11,000 diamond tennis bracelet David had bought her three weeks ago.
When she saw me step out of the elevator flanked by officers, her haughty, expectant smile evaporated.
"Who the hell are you?" Vanessa demanded, clutching her designer handbag against her chest. "This is a private residence. How did you get keycard access to my floor?"
"Good morning, Vanessa," I said, stepping into the living room and looking around at the high-end Italian furniture. "My name is Clara Kant. Well... soon to be Clara Vance again. But more importantly, I am the sole legal owner of the bank account that paid the security deposit, the lease, and every piece of furniture in this room."
Vanessa’s face went pale, but she quickly tried to recover her defense, tossing her blonde hair over her shoulder. "David bought this place for me. The lease is under my company's name. You can't just barge in here. I’ll call David right now—"
"David is currently sitting in a holding cell at the Federal Courthouse on federal wire fraud charges," I interrupted calmly. "His phone has been confiscated as evidence."
Vanessa froze, her phone slipping half an inch in her hand. "What... what are you talking about?"
Gerald, the court receiver, stepped forward, unfolding a thick legal notice. "Miss Cole, under Federal Emergency Seizure Order 2026-CV-88, this property and all contents purchased with funds originating from Account Ending in #4091 are under immediate federal asset forfeiture. You have fifteen minutes to vacate the premises."
"Fifteen minutes?!" Vanessa shrieked. "This is my apartment! My clothes are here! My jewelry!"
"Correction," I said, taking two steps toward her and looking down at her wrist. "The diamond bracelet you're wearing was purchased on November 14th from Tiffany & Co. using an unauthorized wire from my premarital trust account. It is listed as item #14 on the federal asset recovery inventory."
Vanessa pulled her arm back, her eyes flashing with defensive fury. "David gave this to me! It was a gift!"
"You cannot legally accept gifts purchased with stolen funds, Miss Cole," Gerald stated coldly. "Hand over the bracelet, or the deputies will place you under arrest right now for possession of stolen property."
Tears of pure rage and panic welled up in Vanessa’s eyes. Her hands shook violently as she unclasped the diamond bracelet and slammed it down onto the marble counter.
"You're a monster," Vanessa spat at me. "David hated you! Do you hear me? He hated every second he spent with you! He said you were a cold, unfeeling robot who cared more about spreadsheets than being a wife!"
I picked up the diamond bracelet from the counter, slipped it into a velvet jewelry pouch, and looked at her with pure, quiet indifference.
"David lied to you about his money, Vanessa," I said softly. "He lied to you about his power, and he lied to you about his future. And now, you have ten minutes to pack whatever clothes you bought with your own legal money before the deputies escort you to the curb."
I turned my back on her screaming fits, walking back toward the elevator as the deputies began cataloging the suitcases.
As the elevator doors closed, cutting off her sobs, I looked down at the velvet pouch in my hand.

David thought he had used my money to buy a young woman’s affection.
Instead, he had just bought both of them a ticket to absolute ruin.
