Chapter 6 - The Sister's Collapse

By 11:30 AM, the financial quake had reached Melanie’s Luxury Boutique in the city’s high-end shopping district.
For four years, Melanie Kant had paraded herself around local society as a successful fashion entrepreneur and lifestyle influencer. What the public didn't know—and what Melanie had deliberately ignored—was that her boutique’s inventory of imported Italian leather goods and French silk dresses was funded entirely through fake "marketing consultation" invoices billed to Kant Enterprises, which David had routinely laundered through my account.
I stood across the street inside a warm café, watching through the glass window as two federal auditors worked alongside local law enforcement officers inside the store.
Bright yellow SEIZED BY FEDERAL COURT ORDER banners were being taped across the boutique's large front display windows.
Outside, a crowd of local reporters and photographers was gathering. Melanie stepped out of the store’s back entrance into the alley, flanked by her frantic assistant, trying to reach her sports car.
She was intercepted immediately by two local reporters holding microphones.
"Melanie! Is it true your boutique was a shell company for your father’s tax evasion scheme?" a reporter shouted.
"Get those cameras out of my face!" Melanie shrieked, ducking her head behind her designer handbag. "I am an independent business owner! I didn't do anything wrong!"
"Miss Kant! Is it true your personal accounts have been frozen by the federal court?"
Melanie tried to unlock her luxury convertible, but the digital key fob failed. Under the emergency asset seizure, the vehicle’s lease had been revoked, and a tow truck was already backing into the alleyway to hook up the rear wheels.
"No! Stop! That’s my car!" Melanie screamed, hitting the tow truck bumper with her designer heels. "You can't touch my car!"
"Actually, they can," I said, stepping out from the café doorway into the alleyway.
Melanie spun around, her face blotchy and stained with mascara. When she saw me standing there in my white wool suit, looking pristine and untouched, her eyes flared with psychotic rage.
"You!" Melanie roared, lunging toward me. "You did this! You ruined my life! You ruined my business!"
The deputy standing nearby immediately stepped between us, grabbing Melanie by the shoulder and holding her back.
"I didn't ruin your business, Melanie," I said, keeping my voice calm and measured. "Your business was an illusion funded by stolen money. You sat at your mother’s dinner table last night, laughed while your brother pulled my hair, and told me I was lucky he put up with me."
"You are a bitter, jealous bitch!" Melanie sobbed, her manicured nails digging into the deputy’s uniform sleeve. "David should have left you years ago! You destroyed our family!"
"Your family destroyed itself the moment you decided that other people’s work was yours for the taking," I replied. "By the way... the lease on your apartment is tied to your boutique’s corporate credit line. The lock-change crew will be at your building by 2:00 PM."

Melanie’s knees literally buckled. She sank onto the dirty asphalt of the alley, sobbing hysterically as the tow truck lifted her luxury sports car into the air.
I turned on my heel and walked away, leaving her screaming into the cold winter wind.
