Chapter 6 - The Federal Indictment

By eleven o'clock that morning, news of the Hale Enterprises collapse had dominated every major financial network in North America.
On CNBC, a senior analyst stood in front of a digital screen displaying a large photograph of Claire Hale dressed in her dark navy suit outside the Vane International Tower.
"In a unprecedented corporate restructuring," the announcer declared, "Madame Claire Vane—formerly known to the public as Claire Hale—has fully re-asserted primary ownership over Hale Enterprises. Market sources confirm that former CEO Everett Hale has been completely stripped of all executive authority amidst serious allegations of corporate embezzlement and fraudulent asset transfer."
Inside the executive boardroom of Vance Logistics in downtown Manhattan, Marcus Vance sat behind his glass desk, staring at the television screen with cold sweat dripping down his neck.
His office door burst open without a knock.
Four federal agents wearing dark suits and gold badges walked into the room, led by Assistant United States Attorney Richard Vance (no relation).
"Marcus Vance?" the prosecutor asked, opening a leather folder.
Marcus stood up slowly, his hands trembling against his desk. "Richard... what is the meaning of this? We're on the same hospital board—"
"Marcus Vance, you are under arrest for federal wire fraud, conspiracy to commit corporate embezzlement, and illegal securities manipulation relating to unauthorized capital transfers from Hale Enterprises," Richard said coldly.
Two FBI agents moved behind the desk, pulling Marcus's arms behind his back and snapping iron handcuffs around his wrists.
"This is a mistake!" Marcus yelled, his face turning red as he was pulled toward the door. "I was negotiating a legal merger with Everett Hale!"
"Everett Hale didn't have the legal authority to negotiate a sandwich, Marcus," the prosecutor replied coldly. "Madame Vane handed over eight gigabytes of encrypted ledger files three hours ago. You’re facing twenty years in federal prison."
As Marcus Vance was marched through his own corporate lobby in handcuffs, dozens of news cameras flashed outside the glass building.
Standing on the sidewalk across the street, watching the arrest unfold from inside a black armored Maybach, was Claire.
Nathan sat in the front passenger seat, looking through the rearview mirror.
"Marcus Vance's bail hearing is scheduled for tomorrow morning," Nathan reported smoothly. "We have requested that the court freeze all Vance Logistics corporate operational licenses pending full financial restitution."
Claire looked out the tinted window as the federal vehicle drove Marcus away.
"What about Everett?" Claire asked, her tone dry and even.
"Mr. Hale is currently outside the building," Nathan said, pointing toward the main entrance of the Vane International Tower.
Claire shifted her gaze.
Standing outside the heavy revolving glass doors of her headquarters was Everett.
He looked ruined. His tuxedo was gone, replaced by a pair of wrinkled jeans and a dark jacket he had clearly borrowed from a friend. He was standing on the granite steps, trying to push past two heavy Vane security guards who held their hands firmly against his chest.
"He has been waiting there for two hours, Madame Chairwoman," Nathan said. "He insists on speaking to you personally."
Claire watched him through the dark glass of the car for thirty seconds.

She saw the desperation in his face, the wild, pleading look in his eyes, the total collapse of the arrogance that had defined him for ten years.
"Drive around to the underground garage, Nathan," Claire said, turning her head away. "I have a board meeting at twelve."
