Chapter 7 - The Confrontation in the Garage

Despite the security protocols, Everett managed to slip into the lower subterranean parking levels of the Vane International Building by following a delivery truck through the service bay.
When the black Maybach pulled into Executive Bay One, Everett ran out from behind a concrete pillar, throwing his body directly in front of the moving vehicle.
The chauffeur slammed on the brakes, the heavy armored car coming to a halt inches from Everett’s knees.
Nathan instantly unbuckled his seatbelt and reached for his jacket pocket, but Claire placed a gentle hand on his shoulder.
"It's fine, Nathan," Claire said softly. "I'll handle this."
"Madame Chairwoman, he is unstable," Nathan warned.
"He's not unstable, Nathan," Claire said, opening her door. "He's bankrupt."
Claire stepped out of the Maybach onto the polished concrete floor of the garage. The cool, damp subterranean air smelled of motor oil and exhaust.
Everett stood three feet away, panting heavily, his face pale, his dark eyes wide and bloodshot.
"Claire!" Everett gasped, taking a step toward her before two security guards grabbed his arms from behind, pinning him in place. "Claire, please! Don't let them throw me out! Please just hear me out!"
Claire stood by the Maybach, her navy suit unruffled, her arms folded comfortably across her chest.
"You have two minutes, Everett," she said.
Everett’s eyes overflowed with tears. He fell to his knees on the concrete, the iron grip of the security guards holding him upright.
"Claire... I was wrong," Everett sobbed, his voice echoing loudly off the concrete walls. "I was a fool! Vanessa lied to me! My mother manipulated me! They convinced me that you were holding me back, but I realize now that everything I ever had came from you!"
Claire listened without moving a single muscle in her face.
"I didn't know about the trust, Claire!" Everett wailed, shaking his head frantically. "If I had known you were the heir to Vane International, I would have treated you like a queen! I would have honored you every single day!"
A small, quiet laugh escaped Claire’s lips. It was a cold, pitying sound.
"I know, Everett," Claire said softly.
Everett blinked, looking up at her with sudden hope. "You... you know?"
"Yes," Claire said, leaning down slightly so her eyes were level with his. "That’s precisely why I never told you."
Everett’s breath hitched in his throat.
"I spent ten years keeping my true identity secret," Claire said, her voice dropping into a register of icy, absolute truth, "because I wanted to see who you really were when you thought you had all the power."
She shook her head slowly.
"If I had told you I was the Chairwoman of Vane International on our wedding day, you would have bowed to me. You would have been polite, loyal, and attentive—not because you loved me, but because you loved my money."
Everett froze, his face turning gray as stone.
"I gave you ten years to prove that you were a man of character," Claire continued. "I lived simply. I stayed in the background. I endured your mother’s insults. And the very moment you believed you had reached the top of Manhattan without me, you threw your ring at my feet, brought your mistress to our company gala, and called me a barren leech in front of two hundred people."
"Claire..." Everett whispered, his voice cracking into a dry, pathetic rasp. "I... I can change... give me one chance... put me in a low-level position... let me work for you..."
"You don't work for me, Everett," Claire said, standing straight and smoothing the front of her jacket. "You don't exist to me."
She looked at the two security guards holding his arms.
"Hand him over to the NYPD officers waiting at the service gate," Claire ordered. "The federal prosecutor has signed his arrest warrant for corporate wire fraud."
"NO!" Everett screamed as the guards lifted him off his knees and dragged him backward toward the service exit. "CLAIRE! PLEASE! CLAIRE! YOU CAN'T DO THIS TO ME! I'M YOUR HUSBAND!"
Claire didn't look back.
May you like
She turned on her heel, stepped into the private executive elevator, and pressed the button for the seventy-fifth floor.
The heavy steel doors closed smoothly, cutting off his screaming entirely.
