Chapter 5 - The Legal Battle

Over the next two weeks, the war between Dante Moretti and Sal Vance took place not with guns in alleyways, but with lawsuits, port inspections, and financial audits in high-ceilinged Manhattan courtrooms.

Dante’s strategy was brilliant and merciless. Instead of retaliating with violence—which was precisely what Sal wanted in order to draw the authorities' attention to Dante’s empire—Dante unleashed his army of corporate lawyers, forensically auditing every legitimate business front Sal operated.

Emma spent her days at the brownstone working with a physical therapist to regain full strength in her arm, and her evenings helping Dante review financial spreadsheets. To Dante’s surprise, Emma had an incredible eye for detail. Years of managing tight restaurant inventories made her remarkably quick at spotting discrepancies in freight logs.

“Look here,” Emma said one evening, pointing a manicured finger at a line item on a shipping manifest for the Newark docks. “This container is listed as carrying dry agricultural goods, but the tare weight is nearly four tons heavier than the maximum legal load for grain.”

Dante leaned over her shoulder, his chest pressing lightly against her back, sending a wave of warmth through her. He smelled of sandalwood and crisp cotton.

“Contraband,” Dante murmured, his eyes scanning the numbers. “He’s using my secondary logistics company to haul illicit electronics through the port without paying port customs.”

“If we hand this specific manifest to the Waterfront Commission,” Emma noted, turning her head to look at him, “they’ll impound his entire fleet without you having to fire a single shot.”

Dante looked down at her, a look of profound admiration shining in his dark eyes. He reached out, gently cupping her chin in his fingers.

“You are not just a talented baker, Emma Vale,” he said softly. “You are a master strategist.”

Emma smiled, leaning slightly into his touch. “I just like seeing good people win.”

“Is that what I am?” Dante asked quietly, his finger tracing her jawline. “A good man?”

“You saved my life,” she said firmly, her eyes searching his. “You gave me a home when I had nothing. You treat everyone around you with respect and protection. Whatever your family was in the past, Dante... you are a good man.”

Dante’s hand moved from her chin to the back of her neck, gently pulling her closer. This time, there were no phone calls, no interruptions, and no doubts.

His lips met hers in a kiss that was slow, deep, and filled with months of unspoken desire. Emma gasped softly against his mouth, her good hand reaching up to wrap around his neck, pulling him down to her. The warmth of his body overwhelmed her senses, sweeping away every lingering shadow of her traumatic past.

When he finally pulled back, his breath was shallow, his thumb gently caressing her cheekbone.

“Emma,” he whispered against her skin. “I have spent my entire life protecting things—money, territory, reputation. But with you... I want to build something.”

“Build it with me,” she whispered back.

The moment was interrupted by Gabe knocking firmly on the library door. He stepped inside, carrying a thick manila folder.

“Boss,” Gabe said, his voice grim. “Celeste just got off the phone with the Federal Prosecutor’s office. The audit worked. Federal agents just raided Sal Vance’s headquarters in Brooklyn. He’s facing twenty years for smuggling and extortion.”

Dante stood up straight, smoothing his shirt. “Did he go quietly?”

“Not exactly,” Gabe said, glancing briefly at Emma. “He’s out on bail for the next twelve hours until his formal arraignment tomorrow morning. And Boss... he knows it was our legal team that handed over the manifests.”

Dante’s eyes narrowed into hard flints of steel. “Secure the perimeter of the house. No one leaves this property without four armed guards.”

“Understood,” Gabe nodded, stepping out to execute the orders.

Emma stood up, a cold knot of dread tightening in her stomach. “Dante... is he going to try something desperate?”

May you like

Dante turned to her, stepping close to wrap his strong arms around her waist, drawing her flush against his chest.

“Desperate men make mistakes, Emma,” Dante said, his voice an unshakable wall of confidence. “Let him try. This house is a fortress, and you are protected. Tonight, Sal Vance’s empire ends.”
