Chapter 9 - The Promise

Dante looked down at the velvet box in his hands, then up into Emma’s shining eyes.
“When my grandfather came to this city,” Dante began slowly, his voice thick with emotion, “he believed that the only way to protect the people he loved was to build walls, carry weapons, and make others afraid. My father lived the same way. For forty years, I believed that was my destiny, too.”
He gently took Emma’s left hand—the hand that had once been broken, the hand that was now whole and strong.
“Then you called me,” Dante continued, opening the box to reveal a stunning platinum ring set with a clear, radiant-cut diamond surrounded by subtle emeralds. “You called me not because you feared me, but because you trusted me. You taught me that true power isn't about making people afraid. It’s about creating a place where the people you love can grow.”
He sank down onto one knee on the brick patio, looking up at her with complete vulnerability.
“Emma Vale, will you marry me? Will you spend the rest of your life building a home with me?”
Emma covered her mouth with both hands, tears of joy streaming down her cheeks. The journey from that terrifying bathroom floor in Astoria to this sun-drenched courtyard washed through her memory—a journey that had transformed her from a victim into a woman of strength, love, and purpose.
“Yes,” she whispered, her voice soaring with absolute certainty. “Yes, Dante! Absolutely yes!”
Dante stood up, slipping the ring onto her finger. It fit perfectly. He pulled her into his arms, lifting her off her feet as he kissed her with a passion that made the rest of the world melt away.
Behind them, the glass door to the patio opened. Rosa, Matteo, Gabe, and the bakery staff burst into applause and cheers, raising glasses of prosecco to toast the newly engaged couple.
Dante held Emma tight against his chest, leaning his forehead against hers.

“No more shadows, Emma,” he promised softly against her lips. “Only light.”
“Only light,” she repeated, holding his face in her hands, her heart completely at peace.
