Chapter 10 - The New Queen

Six months later.
The spring rain was falling gently over the city, washing the streets clean, turning the manicured gardens of the Moretti estate into a vibrant sea of green and blooming white roses.
Inside the grand ballroom of the estate, three hundred of the most influential people in the country were gathered under the massive crystal chandeliers.
Senators, foreign ambassadors, corporate titans, and high-ranking figures from the city's private networks stood in tailored tuxedos and evening gowns, sipping champagne, speaking in quiet, respectful tones.
At the head of the room, standing beside a set of towering French doors that opened onto the grand marble terrace, was Luca Moretti.
He looked commanding, magnificent, and absolute in a dark bespoke tuxedo, a thin silver band resting on his left ring finger—a sign of total commitment to the woman who had transformed his world.
Beside him stood I.
I wore a sweeping, emerald-green silk gown that bared my shoulders and pooled elegantly around my feet. My hair was styled in a classic, elegant updo, and on my lips was the same bold, brilliant red lipstick that had marked the beginning of my liberation.
On my right hand sat a stunning, emerald-cut diamond ring—a symbol not of ownership, but of absolute partnership.
As Chief Operations Director of Moretti Holdings, I had led the corporate acquisition that doubled the family’s international trade volume in less than six months. The board of directors no longer merely respected me; they treated my decisions as law.
And in the darker, unseen corridors of the city, where power was traded in loyalty and strength, people no longer spoke of the Moretti family as a solitary empire run by one ruthless titan. They spoke of the King and his Queen—a formidable, invincible pair who ruled their domain with unmatched intelligence, absolute loyalty, and unwavering justice.
A senior foreign diplomat approached us, bowing his head respectfully to Luca before turning to me with a warm, genuine smile.
“Director Moretti,” the diplomat said smoothly, using my new legal name. “The trade agreements for the Singapore docks have been ratified by the ministry this afternoon. They said your terms were the most precise and ironclad they have ever encountered.”
“When you build a bridge, Ambassador,” I replied calmly, taking a sip of vintage champagne from my glass, “you ensure the foundation can withstand any storm.”
“Indeed,” the diplomat agreed, bowing again before stepping back into the crowd.
Luca turned his head toward me, a slow, proud smile touching his granite features. He raised his arm, and I slid my hand comfortably through his elbow, leaning slightly into his solid warmth.
“You handled that beautifully, my love,” Luca whispered into my ear, his deep baritone sending a delicious shiver down my spine.
“I learned from the best,” I replied, looking up at him with clear, glowing eyes.
Luca looked down at me, his gaze softening into that rare, fierce tenderness that he reserved exclusively for me.
“No,” he murmured, pressing a soft kiss against my temple. “You didn't learn. You were always this powerful, Serena. You just needed a sanctuary big enough for your wings.”
I looked out across the glittering ballroom, through the towering glass windows, and out into the clear night sky beyond.
Six months ago, I was a terrified woman hiding in a dark bedroom, cradling a bruised face, holding a phone with trembling hands, believing my life was over.
Tonight, I stood at the highest peak of the city, safe, adored, empowered, and entirely free.
I slid my fingers down to lock firmly into Luca’s large, warm hand, squeezing his grip tightly.
He squeezed back—a silent, absolute promise that would last a lifetime.

I was no longer running. I was no longer hiding.
I was home.
