Chapter 5 - The Morning Strike

The morning sun broke over the city skyline in a sharp blade of golden light, scattering the lingering rain clouds into thin ribbons of gray.
I woke up at 6:00 a.m. in the king-sized bed, my body rested for the first time in months, despite the dull throb in my cheek. The sedative Dr. Aris had provided had given me four hours of deep, dreamless sleep.
When I stepped into the adjoining marble bathroom, I looked into the large, gilded mirror.
The left side of my face was bruised a dark, plum purple along the cheekbone, but the ice packs had kept the swelling under control. My eyes were clear. The soft, terrified look that had haunted my reflection for two years was entirely gone, replaced by a cold, sharp focus that mirrored the atmosphere of the estate I was in.
On the marble counter lay a immaculate stack of clothes: a crisp white silk blouse, a tailored charcoal pencil skirt, a matching blazer, and a pair of dark leather heels—all precisely in my size. Next to the clothes was a small, black velvet box.
I opened the box. Inside sat a tube of rich, vibrant red lipstick—the exact shade Evan had forbidden me from wearing three years ago because he claimed it made me look “available.”
A quiet, vicious smile touched my lips. I applied the lipstick with steady, precise strokes.
When I walked down the grand staircase into the main dining room ten minutes later, Luca was sitting at the head of a massive mahogany table, dressed in a three-piece charcoal suit, sipping dark black coffee while reviewing a stack of legal documents.
He looked up as my heels clicked against the marble.
His dark eyes swept over me—taking in the tailored suit, the posture, and the bold red lipstick. A flash of pure, primal approval flared deep within his irises before he masked it with his usual stoic composure.
“Good morning, Serena,” he said, rising from his chair like a king greeting a visiting monarch. “You look dangerous.”
“I feel focused,” I replied, sitting in the chair to his right, where a cup of black espresso and a plate of fresh fruit were already waiting for me.
“Good. Because the game has begun.”
Luca slid a tablet across the table toward me.
On the screen was a live security feed from the front entrance of my apartment building on 4th Street.
At 7:15 a.m., Evan’s dark blue Audi pulled up to the curb, parking illegally in the bus zone. He got out of the car, looking disheveled, his eyes bloodshot, his trench coat rumpled from sleeping in his vehicle or a bar booth. He marched up the front steps with a dark, furious expression on his face, clearly intending to breach the apartment, deliver a rehearsed, tearful apology, and re-establish his dominance.
Ten seconds later, the camera feed switched to the interior hallway outside our four-story apartment door.
Evan reached the door, pulled out his key, and shoved it into the lock.
He turned it.
The key spun freely without catching the tumblers.
Evan froze. He pulled the key out, looked at it in confusion, shoved it back in, and rattled the door handle violently.
The lock had been completely replaced.
“At 3:00 a.m. this morning,” Luca explained smoothly, taking a sip of his coffee, “a team of locksmiths and security contractors under my employment entered the premises. They changed every lock on the doors, secured the windows, and transferred the property lease into an anonymous corporate trust owned by Moretti Holdings.”
I watched the screen as Evan began pounding his fists against the heavy wooden door, his face turning bright red with rage. He pulled out his phone, his thumb tapping furiously against the screen.
A second later, my own phone—resting quietly beside my espresso cup—began to buzz.
EVAN VANCE IS CALLING...
I didn't reach for it. I simply watched the screen buzz across the polished wood.
When the call timed out, a text message immediately flashed onto the screen:
WHERE THE HELL ARE YOU? WHAT DID YOU DO TO THE LOCKS? OPEN THIS DOOR RIGHT NOW OR I swear TO GOD SERENA I WILL CALL THE POLICE AND REPORT YOU STOLE MY CAMERA EQUIPMENT.
I picked up the phone, tapped a quick reply, and set it back down.
I didn't steal your equipment, Evan. It’s already been removed.
On the security feed, Evan read the text message. His jaw dropped. He began typing furiously again.
Before he could send another message, two massive, broad-shouldered men in tailored suits—Luca’s private security detail—stepped out of the stairwell and approached Evan from behind.
One of the men, a stone-faced operative named Marcus, tapped Evan on the shoulder.
Evan spun around, shouting something angry. Marcus didn't flinch. He simply pulled a thick, white envelope from his suit pocket and handed it to Evan.
Inside that envelope, I knew, was a formal notice of eviction, a restraining order issued by a high-court judge on an emergency docket at 5:00 a.m., and a third-party corporate inventory list detailing that every single piece of equipment, clothing, and personal effect belonging to Evan Vance had been neatly packed into secure storage units at the docks, awaiting his retrieval upon full payment of his defaulted loans.
On the security camera, Evan opened the envelope. As his eyes scanned the legal documents bearing the terrifying, gold-embossed seal of the Moretti Legal Group, all the blood drained out of his face until he looked like a walking ghost.
He looked up at the two massive security guards, his lips trembling, his previous rage dissolving into pathetic, wide-eyed terror.
Marcus pointed a thick finger down the hallway toward the elevator.
Evan didn't say another word. He clutched the envelope to his chest, turned around, and practically ran down the corridor toward the exit.
I stared at the screen as the video feed cut to black.
A deep, quiet breath escaped my lips—a breath I felt like I had been holding for two straight years. The sudden, overwhelming power of watching my abuser be crushed without a single voice raised or a single drop of blood spilled was intoxicating.
“He is gone from the building,” Luca said softly, leaning closer to me. “By noon today, the IRS will serve him with a formal audit notice regarding his Delaware LLC. By three o'clock, his personal bank accounts will be frozen pending investigation into the forged loan documents. He is officially financially paralyzed.”
I looked at Luca, my eyes burning with a mix of fierce gratitude and deep, complex emotion.
“How do I ever repay you for this, Luca?” I asked softly.
May you like
Luca reached across the table. For the first time, his large, warm hand covered mine completely, his thumb tracing a slow, rhythmic circle across my knuckles.
“You don't repay me, Serena,” he said, his baritone voice dropping into a deep, gravelly tone that made my heart hammer inside my ribs. “You stay by my side. And you never let another man make you feel small again.”
