Chapter 4 - The Brother's Ledger

Down in the subterranean security war room beneath the garage, the air was cold, smelling of ozone, heated servers, and gun oil.

I stood before a wall of fourteen glowing monitors displaying live camera feeds from the estate gates, the docks, and Dominic’s private high-rise penthouse downtown.

Claire sat at the central command desk, her fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard with the terrifying speed of an intelligence analyst.

“Ava was right,” Claire said, bringing up a split-screen financial audit. “Dominic didn't just authorize the dock gates in Miami. He executed a secondary equity transfer two hours ago, assigning thirty percent of your shipping logistics stock to Vanguard Holdings as collateral for a forty-million-dollar credit line in the Cayman Islands.”

I rested my palms flat against the steel desk, staring at my brother’s face glowing on the central monitor.

“Dominic owes twenty million to offshore casinos,” I said quietly, my voice devoid of any warmth. “Julian Vance didn't buy him with power. He bought him with debt.”

“Dominic is meeting Julian at the Grand Lake Hotel in forty-five minutes,” Claire added, pulling up an intercepted encrypted text thread. “They’re finalizing the transfer of your estate's deed while you’re presumed dead or pinned down in Miami.”

I reached down to my belt, checking the magazine lock on my custom SIG Sauer P226.

“Call the team,” I ordered my chief lieutenant, Leo, who stood at the doorway armed with an M4 carbine. “We take three SUVs. We hit the Grand Lake Hotel, seal the exits, and bring Dominic back here in plastic.”

“No,” Claire’s voice cut through the room like a cold blade.

I turned to stare at her. “What did you say?”

Claire stood up from the command chair, walking around the desk until she was standing inches from my chest.

“You hit the Grand Lake Hotel with three armed SUVs, and Julian’s private military team turns Downtown Chicago into a war zone,” Claire said, her eyes burning with tactical authority. “Julian has thirty former special operations mercenaries holding that hotel floor. You’ll be walking straight into a kill box.”

“Dominic tried to murder my children!” I roared, my composure finally shattering, my fist slamming hard against the steel desk.

“And I won't let you get yourself killed trying to execute revenge without a tactical plan!” Claire shouted right back, not yielding an inch of ground.

Leo took a step back, his eyes wide, stunned that a former housemaid was standing chest-to-chest with Marcus Vale, the most feared syndicate chief in the Midwest.

Claire took a long, slow breath, lowering her tone into a deadly, precise whisper.

“You want your brother brought to justice?” Claire asked. “You want Julian Vance’s empire dismantled so your daughters never have to look over their shoulders again?”

“How?” I demanded.

Claire reached down into her medical bag, pulled out a small, metallic cylinder the size of a pen, and laid it on the desk between us.

“This is a military-grade biometric signal scrambler,” Claire said. “I brought it from Afghanistan. If we drop this into the central server junction at the Grand Lake Hotel, Julian’s entire offshore wire network locks down for ninety minutes.”

She looked up at me, a cold, lethal smile touching her lips.

“You don't send three SUVs, Marcus,” Claire whispered. “You send two people who know how to move through shadows. You and me.”
