Chapter 5 - The Grand Lake Infiltration

The Grand Lake Hotel rose thirty-four stories above the frozen shores of Lake Michigan—a glass-and-marble monument to Chicago’s elite financial power.
At 11:30 PM, rain mixed with sleet washed over the glass roof of the penthouse conservatory on the top floor.
In the shadows of the thirty-third-floor service stairwell, Claire and I moved silently upward.
Claire was no longer wearing her maid’s uniform or her grey sweater. She wore black tactical trousers, a fitted Kevlar vest, night-vision goggles resting on her forehead, and a suppressed Glock 19 strapped to her thigh. She moved with the quiet, effortless precision of a apex predator.
I followed two steps behind her, armed with my suppressed MP5 submachine gun.
“Server room is twenty feet down the corridor,” Claire whispered into her throat mic, her breath fogging slightly in the cold stairwell air. “Two guards posted at the door. Kevlar plates, sidearms, radio headsets.”
“I take the left,” I whispered back. “You take the right.”
“On three,” Claire said. “One... two... three.”
Claire hit the heavy fire door with her shoulder, dropping low instantly as she stepped into the dimly lit corridor.
Phfft! Phfft!
Her suppressed Glock barked twice. The right-hand guard collapsed silently against the wall, a neat pair of holes drilled straight through his chest plate before his hand could touch his sidearm.
I stepped through right behind her, bringing my MP5 up and dropping the second guard with two rounds to his center mass before his body hit the carpet.
Total elapsed time: two point four seconds.
Claire didn't waste a breath. She pulled a electronic key-card bypass tool from her utility belt, slapped it onto the server room lock, and jammed her thumb against the digital reader.
The heavy steel door clicked open.
We stepped inside surrounded by racks of glowing blue servers humming softly in the climate-controlled air.
Claire walked straight to the central mainframe, pulled out the metallic scrambler tube, and jammed it directly into the primary fiber-optic input line.
The server racks instantly flashed red. Emergency alarm lights began pulsing silently across the ceiling.
Claire tapped her wrist comms. “Mainframe compromised. Julian’s Zurich, Nassau, and Cayman accounts are locked solid for eighty-nine minutes.”

She turned around, looking at me through the dim red light.
“Now,” Claire whispered, pulling her suppressed pistol up. “Let's go talk to your brother.”
