Chapter 3 - Unraveling the Foundation

The hallway outside Courtroom 302 erupted into muted chaos. Daniel stood frozen, holding the blue folder as if it were a burning coal, while Olivia tore at the pages, her polished fingernails ripping through the legal paper.
"This is a bluff!" Olivia hissed, her voice losing its sweet edge, turning harsh and shrill. "Daniel, tell me this is a bluff! She's a physical therapist! She doesn't know anything about federal court or offshore accounts!"
"Shut up, Olivia!" Daniel snapped, his hands shaking as he read the cover page. His eyes scanned the listed plaintiffs: The Estate of Richard Carter, Apex Global Holdings, and Emma Carter.
"Apex Global?" Daniel whispered, turning his horrified gaze back toward me. "Why is Apex Global listed on this complaint? They're the largest commercial development conglomerate in the Midwest!"
"Because, Daniel," I said, resting both hands comfortably over my bump, "my late father wasn't a retired high school teacher as I let you believe when we met in college. His name was Richard Carter, founder and majority shareholder of Apex Global Holdings."
Daniel's mouth opened, but no sound came out.
When Daniel and I met seven years ago, I wanted to be loved for who I was, not for my family's immense wealth. My father understood and supported my desire to build a normal life as a physical therapist. When he passed away three years ago, his entire estate and controlling shares in Apex were placed into a blind private trust managed by my mother and Arthur Vance—waiting until I was ready to assume leadership.
During our four years of marriage, Daniel had constantly complained about his struggles to secure commercial contracts. I had quietly recommended his firm to Apex's board, leading to Carter & Associates securing a fifty-million-dollar downtown development contract six months ago.
Instead of honoring that gift, Daniel had conspired with Olivia—who worked as an asset manager—to funnel fifteen million dollars from the Apex project into an unrecorded offshore account in the Cayman Islands, planning to declare his firm bankrupt after divorcing me, walk away with Olivia, and start a new firm under her name.
"You thought you were marrying a quiet, middle-class girl you could easily discard when a prettier, wealthier option came along," I said coldly. "You didn't realize that every contract your firm signed over the last three years was under direct audit by my family's legal team."
"Emma... wait," Daniel stammered, stepping away from Olivia toward me. "Emma, let's talk about this privately. We were married for four years! We're having a child together!"
"Correction, Daniel," I said, holding up a finger. "We were married. The divorce decree you fought so hard to fast-track was signed five minutes ago. You are no longer my husband, and you have zero legal claim to any protection under marital asset rules."
Olivia's eyes burned with pure venom. "You trapped him! You waited until the divorce was finalized on purpose!"
"Of course I did," I replied, staring directly at her. "If I had exposed him before the divorce, he would have tried to claim half of my trust assets as marital property. By letting him sign that waiver and push for a quick settlement today, he legally severed himself from every dollar I own."
Daniel looked at the paper in his hands, then at Olivia, then back at me. His pristine, polished world was collapsing around him in real time.
"What about the wedding downstairs?" Olivia demanded, grabbing Daniel's arm tightly. "Daniel! We have a magistrate waiting in twenty minutes! The guests are already arriving at the restaurant!"

Daniel shoved her hand off his arm with sudden violence. "Are you out of your mind, Olivia?! The Feds are auditing our accounts! There isn't going to be a wedding!"
Olivia gasped, stumbling back against the marble pillar as if she had been slapped. The victory she had celebrated ten minutes ago had turned into a total disaster.
