Chapter 8 - The Arrival

Three days later, during a peaceful, rain-filled night in Lake Forest, my daughter decided it was time to enter the world.
My mother drove me to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where Arthur Vance had arranged for a private suite on the maternity floor. The care was extraordinary, surrounded by dedicated doctors and gentle nurses who knew nothing of the tabloid drama that had swept the city weeks earlier.
At 4:14 a.m. on a quiet Tuesday morning, after six hours of labor, the sharp, beautiful cry of a newborn baby filled the delivery room.
"It's a girl!" the doctor announced, holding up a healthy, dark-haired baby who immediately squirmed against the warm blanket.
The nurse placed her directly onto my chest. I wrapped my arms around her tiny, fragile body, tears of pure joy finally streaming down my face. All the pain, all the stress, and all the betrayal of the past year melted away into absolute insignificance the moment I looked into her bright, dark eyes.
"She's perfect, Emma," my mother whispered, wiping tears from her eyes as she stood beside my bed. "She looks just like you."
"Her name is Maya," I whispered, kissing her soft, warm forehead. "Maya Richard Carter."
A hour later, after Maya had been fed and rested quietly in my arms, Arthur Vance walked into the room carrying a large bouquet of fresh white lilies and a single legal document.
"Congratulations, Emma," Arthur said gently, placing the flowers on the window sill. "She is absolutely beautiful."
"Thank you, Arthur," I smiled, holding Maya close. "I take it you have news?"
Arthur held up the folder. "The family court judge signed the final decree an hour ago. Daniel Carter’s parental rights have been permanently terminated under Illinois law. Furthermore, the federal judge presiding over his criminal case accepted his full guilty plea this morning."
"What is his sentence?"
"Fifteen years in federal prison, followed by five years of supervised release," Arthur reported. "And Olivia Bennett received seven years for wire fraud and criminal conspiracy. Neither of them will ever be able to approach you or Maya again."
I looked down at my sleeping daughter, watching her tiny chest rise and fall in a soft, peaceful rhythm. The men and women who had tried to destroy our lives were now locked away behind bars, their reputations destroyed, their stolen wealth recovered, and their future erased.

"It's over," I murmured softly.
"No, Miss Carter," Arthur corrected me with a warm, genuine smile. "The revenge is over. Your real life is just beginning."
