Chapter 5 - The Ambush at the Driveway

Wail.
The sudden, piercing scream of police sirens shattered the quiet evening of our suburban cul-de-sac.
Red and blue strobe lights began flashing through the frosted glass windows of the heavy garage doors, casting dancing, frantic patterns across the concrete floor and walls.
Inside the house, I heard immediate panic.
"What is that?!" Evelyn’s voice shrieked from the kitchen. "Ryan, why are there police lights outside?!"
"I don't know!" Ryan yelled back, his footsteps sprinting toward the front entryway.
Outside, a powerful megaphone boomed, its sound vibrating through the garage walls.
"THIS IS THE TRAVIS COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE. RYAN PARKER, EVELYN PARKER, STEP OUT OF THE RESIDENCE WITH YOUR HANDS VISIBLE IMMEDIATELY."
"Rachel..." I whispered into the burner phone, still clutched tightly in my fingers.
"I’m right here, Claire," Rachel’s voice sounded through the speaker. "I’m standing behind Captain Miller’s cruiser in your driveway. We have five units surrounding the house."
"They... they locked the garage door," I said, my breath catching in my throat. "They have my prescription."
"They won't have it for much longer," Rachel said coldly. "Captain, break the front door down if they don't open it in ten seconds."
Through the frosted garage windows, I watched the silhouettes of armed officers moving rapidly across the lawn.
Inside the kitchen, high-pitched screaming broke out.
"Wait! Don't shoot! Don't shoot!" Ryan was screaming at the top of his lungs. "There’s been a mistake! This is a private family matter!"
"Hands behind your back! Face down on the floor! Face down now!" an officer roared.
The heavy sound of boots stomping through the house echoed through the walls.
"Where is she?!" Rachel’s voice boomed from inside the house now. She had walked right in behind the tactical team. "Ryan Parker, where is your wife?!"
"She's... she's in the master bedroom sleeping!" Ryan lied frantically, his voice muffled as he was slammed against the hardwood floor. "She had knee surgery today! She's heavily medicated!"
"You lying bastard," Rachel spat. "Captain, check the garage. The camera feed shows they dragged her through the hallway."
Steps rushed down the hallway toward the garage door.
BANG! BANG! BANG!
"Claire?!" Captain Miller’s voice bellowed through the thick wood. "Claire Bennett, are you in there?!"
"I’m here!" I screamed with every ounce of strength left in my body. "I’m in the back corner! The key... the key is hanging on the wall by the light switch!"
A second later, the heavy brass deadbolt clicked open.
The door swung wide, letting in a flood of bright white kitchen light.
Three armed deputies stepped into the garage, their flashlights cutting through the gloom, their weapons held at low ready. Behind them stood Rachel Bennett, wearing an impeccably tailored black suit, her eyes burning with pure, unadulterated fury.
When the beam of Captain Miller’s flashlight swept across the concrete floor—taking in the trail of blood, my torn hospital gown, my bloody forearms, and my broken body curled up beside the steel safe—he let out an audible gasp.
"Jesus Christ," Miller whispered, holstering his sidearm and sprinting across the concrete toward me. "Paramedics! Get the rig up the driveway right now!"
Rachel ran right beside him, dropping to her knees on the cold floor without a single thought for her expensive suit. She pulled her silk scarf off and gently wrapped it around my bleeding right arm, tears brimming in her eyes.
"I’ve got you, Claire," Rachel choked out, holding my head against her shoulder. "I’ve got you. It's over."
I looked past her shoulder, through the open door into the bright kitchen.
Ryan was pinned to the floor by two massive deputies, his face smashed against the tile, his hands bound tightly behind his back in heavy steel handcuffs.
Beside him, Evelyn was being held against the kitchen counter, her cream-colored silk blouse disheveled, her expensive makeup ruined by frantic, terrified tears.
"You can't do this!" Evelyn was shrieking at the top of her lungs. "This is our house! She’s mentally ill! She fell!"
May you like
Captain Miller turned his head toward the kitchen, his face contorted in absolute disgust.
"Save it for the magistrate, lady," Miller growled. "You're both going to central booking for attempted murder, felony kidnapping, and torture."
