Chapter 6 - The Hospital Warrant

The white lights of the emergency room at St. David’s Medical Center hummed softly above my bed.

By midnight, the orthopedic surgeon had finished assessing the damage to my leg. The titanium rod had held, but two of the lower surgical screws had been severely stressed when Evelyn knocked my crutch away, causing extensive internal tissue bleeding and tearing three major muscle groups.

I was hooked up to a continuous IV drip of hydromorphone, a warm thermal blanket pulled up to my chin. The agonizing fire in my bone had finally retreated into a dull, manageable ache.

Rachel sat in the armchair beside my bed, a sleek silver laptop resting on her knees. Standing near the door was Captain Miller and an Assistant District Attorney named Marcus Vance.

"We have the complete cloud recording, Claire," ADA Vance said, tapping his tablet. "The audio and visual quality from the garage camera is pristine. We can hear every single word Evelyn and Ryan spoke."

"Is it... enough?" I asked, my voice weak and raspy.

"It’s more than enough," Vance replied with a cold, professional smile. "We’ve already secured an emergency no-bail detention order for both of them. Given the severity of your injuries, the pre-meditated nature of the attack, and the clear financial motive, we are charging Ryan Parker and Evelyn Parker with First-Degree Felony Kidnapping, Aggravated Assault Causing Serious Bodily Injury to a Disabled Person, and Grand Extortion."

Rachel closed her laptop with a sharp click. "And that’s just the criminal side, Claire. While you were in CT, I executed an emergency court injunction freezing every personal and corporate account associated with Ryan and Evelyn."

I looked at Rachel, my eyes heavy with exhaustion. "What about the shell company in Delaware?"

Rachel’s eyes flashed with fierce satisfaction. "We hit them with a forensic financial warrant three hours ago. The paper trail is ironclad. Evelyn transferred 1.8 million dollars from your agency’s reserve account over the last three years. She used your money to purchase a luxury waterfront condo in Corpus Christi."

"She bought a condo... with my grandmother’s money?" I whispered, a cold wave of anger washing over me.

"She did," Rachel said softly. "And tomorrow morning, I am filing a civil forfeiture suit to seize that condo, along with Ryan’s Audi, his investment portfolio, and his share of the house. By the time I am done with them in civil court, neither of them will own a single pair of shoes."

A knock sounded at the hospital room door.

A uniform deputy stepped inside, carrying a large clear plastic evidence bag. Inside the bag sat the thick Manila folder Evelyn had been holding when I arrived home.

"Captain," the deputy said, handing the bag to Miller. "We retrieved this from the kitchen table. It was sitting right beside the suspect’s purse."

Captain Miller handed the bag to Rachel.

Rachel pulled out a pair of latex gloves, opened the folder, and began laying the documents across my tray table.

There were bank authorizations, property deeds, blank stock transfer forms, and a heavily detailed life insurance policy taken out on my name four months ago.

Rachel stopped moving when she saw the insurance policy. Her jaw tightened, her face turning dead white.

"Claire..." Rachel whispered, her voice shaking slightly. "Look at the payout clause."

I leaned forward, scanning the fine print on the third page.

Policy Value: $5,000,000. Primary Beneficiary: Ryan Parker. Special Endorsement: Payable in full in the event of accidental death, including post-surgical complications or accidental medication overdose.

The room went dead silent.

They hadn't just wanted my grandmother’s real estate agency.

If I had signed those papers on the garage floor, they weren't going to leave me in the garage to recover.

They were going to wait until I was unconscious, force an entire bottle of oxycodone down my throat, and call an ambulance six hours later to report a tragic, accidental post-surgical overdose.
