Chapter 6 - The Shadow in Manhattan

The Manhattan skyline was shrouded in a thick layer of cold morning fog as Damian’s three black SUVs crossed the upper level of the Queensboro Bridge. The city was just beginning to wake up, its streetlights casting long yellow streaks across the wet asphalt.

In the backseat of the lead vehicle, Damian sat quietly, checking the action on his black custom firearm. Beside him, Frank Rossi monitored three different radio channels, his earpiece glowing with a small blue light.

"Leo picked up a hit on Marcus Vance's cell signal," Frank reported, looking up from his tablet. "He left his midtown office twenty minutes ago in a dark sedan. He is heading toward a private warehouse dock in the Red Hook district of Brooklyn."

"Who is he meeting?" Damian asked coldly.

"A maritime freight agent named Victor Kroll," Frank replied. "Kroll manages the container shipments for Apex Maritime. It looks like Marcus is trying to secure passage out of the country on a foreign cargo ship leaving at dawn."

Damian looked out at the rain-slicked bridge cables. "He knows Arthur was taken. He is running."

"Should we intercept him before he reaches the docks?" Frank asked.

"No," Damian said. "Let him reach the warehouse. I want Kroll and Marcus in the same room."

Ten minutes later, the convoy pulled into the quiet, industrial docklands of Red Hook. Massive brick warehouses built in the late nineteenth century lined the cobblestone streets, their rusting iron doors facing the black waters of the harbor. The scent of salt water, diesel exhaust, and wet asphalt filled the air.

Damian’s vehicles parked behind a row of stacked steel shipping containers two blocks away from Warehouse 14. The building was a massive, weathered structure with high windows, its loading dock lit by two buzzing halogen lamps.

Frank handed Damian a small earpiece. "Leo has tapped the warehouse's internal security cameras. There are four armed guards inside, plus Marcus Vance and Victor Kroll."

Damian put the earpiece in and stepped out into the cold drizzle, his dark coat wrapped tight around his shoulders. Four of his top tactical men stepped out behind him, moving silently through the shadows between the shipping containers.

They reached the side entrance of Warehouse 14. Frank pulled out a small lock-bypass tool, inserted it into the door's keyhole, and turned it with a soft click. The heavy metal door slid open an inch without making a sound.

Inside, the warehouse was filled with crates, forklifts, and large wooden shipping boxes marked with international customs stamps. In the center of the vast floor, under a hanging metal lamp, stood Marcus Vance.

Marcus was thirty-five years old, dressed in a expensive tactical jacket, his face pale and dripping with sweat. He was pacing back and forth in front of a heavy, broad-shouldered man wearing a dark trench coat—Victor Kroll.

"You don't understand, Kroll!" Marcus was shouting frantically, his voice echoing off the corrugated iron walls. "My uncle isn't answering his phone! The estate went completely dark at midnight! Damian Rourke knows! I need to get on that cargo ship now!"

Kroll looked at Marcus with cold contempt, lighting a cigarette with a silver lighter. "Calm down, Vance. You are panicking like a child. Even if Rourke suspects something, he has no direct proof linking Vanguard to his son's illness. Your uncle is a professional. He wouldn't talk."

"My uncle is an old man who panics under pressure!" Marcus yelled back. "If Damian Rourke puts him in a room for ten minutes, my uncle will give him everything—the bank codes, the Falcone contracts, Apex Maritime's offshore accounts! We need to pull our teams back and liquidate the harbor leases immediately!"

"It's too late for that," a voice called out from the darkness.

Marcus and Kroll froze. The four guards positioned near the forklifts instantly reached for their weapons, but before they could draw, dark figures stepped out from behind the shipping crates.

Thump. Thump. Thump.

Suppressed shots rang out through the warehouse space. The four guards collapsed to the concrete floor before they could even scream.

Damian Rourke walked slowly into the circle of yellow light, his firearm held steadily at his side. Frank Rossi and three armed men stepped out behind him, completely surrounding Marcus and Kroll.

Marcus backed away in terror, his knees shaking so hard he nearly tripped over a wooden pallet. "Damian... Damian, wait! Listen to me!"

Victor Kroll did not run. Instead, he slowly dropped his cigarette onto the concrete floor and crushed it under his boot, his dark eyes fixing onto Damian with a look of cold calculation.

"Damian Rourke," Kroll said smoothly, speaking with a heavy Eastern European accent. "You are far outside your jurisdiction in Red Hook. This dock belongs to Apex Maritime."

"Nothing in this city belongs to Apex Maritime," Damian said softly, stepping closer until he was only five feet away from Marcus.

Marcus fell to his knees, throwing his hands up in panic. "It wasn't my idea, Damian! I swear to God! Anthony Falcone made the deal with Apex! They wanted the Hudson container terminals! They told me if I provided the chemical delivery framework through my uncle, they would clear my family's debts!"

"Where is Anthony Falcone tonight?" Damian asked, ignoring Marcus's frantic crying completely.

"He's at his private estate in Glen Cove!" Marcus blurted out immediately, eager to save his own life. "He's meeting with the board representatives from Apex Maritime at eight o'clock this morning to finalize the dock seizure documents! They think you're going to be forced to sign over the leases once Ethan dies!"

Damian looked down at Marcus, his face completely motionless. "My son is not going to die, Marcus."

Marcus blinked through his tears, confusion showing across his face. "What?"

"A three-year-old girl found your poison," Damian said quietly. "Your uncle is currently in my subterranean cellar. And you are out of time."

Damian turned to Frank. "Secure them both. Put them in the back of the secondary transport van. Strip them of all communication devices."

"Wait! No! Damian, please!" Marcus shrieked as Frank’s men grabbed him by his arms, hauling him up and slapping heavy metal cuffs onto his wrists. Victor Kroll was secured silently, knowing better than to resist a armed team in an isolated warehouse.

Damian walked out of the warehouse toward his waiting SUV. Dawn was beginning to break over the East River, turning the sky a pale, icy blue.

He pulled his phone from his coat pocket and dialed the estate's secure line.

"Estate central," the voice of his head house guard answered.

"Status on Ethan," Damian commanded.

"The new medical team arrived twenty minutes ago, boss," the guard reported. "They cleared his room of all previous linens, installed clean air purification units, and started him on a targeted heavy-metal flushing protocol. Dr. Miller says his heart rhythm has already stabilized significantly since the pillow was removed."

Damian let out a long, quiet breath, feeling a small fraction of the immense weight lifting off his chest.

"And Mrs. Hayes and her daughter?" Damian asked.

"They are resting safely in the master suite on the second floor, sir. Special protection detail is outside their door."

"Keep them safe," Damian said. "We are heading to Glen Cove to finish this."
