Chapter 5 - The Glass House Crumbles

The dining hall erupted into chaos.
“You treacherous bastard!” Salvatore roared, his face turning a deep, dangerous shade of purple as he pointed a trembling finger at Adrian. “You lured us here to steal my distribution hubs? We had an agreement! A marriage alliance!”
“An alliance built on fraud and poison is no alliance at all, Salvatore,” Adrian said, his voice dropping into a chilling, absolute register that cut through Salvatore’s shouting like a blade.
Celeste stood up beside her father, her eyes wild with panic and fury. She turned her venomous gaze entirely onto Nora.
“You!” Celeste shrieked, reaching across the table as if to grab Nora by her throat. “You useless, ugly pathetic rat! I gave you one job! One simple job!”
“Sit down, Celeste,” Nora said quietly.
The absolute, icy authority in Nora’s voice caught Celeste completely off guard. For ten years, Nora had used a soft, stammering tone, flinching at every raised voice. Hearing her speak with such calm, dangerous composure was like watching a ghost come to life.
“What did you just say to me?” Celeste gasped out, her eyes bulging.
Nora slowly reached up to her right temple. Without breaking eye contact with her sister, she slid her fingers beneath the edge of the silicone scar patch and peeled it away in one smooth, deliberate motion, tossing the rubbery mask directly into Celeste’s soup bowl.
Then, Nora reached up and removed the thick, distorted glasses, letting her rich brown hair fall naturally over her shoulders. She stood up from her chair, drawing herself up to her full height, illuminated by the bright crystal chandeliers above.
Salvatore stumbled backward, gasping for air as if he had been struck in the chest with a sledgehammer. “My God...”
Celeste stared at her sister in total, paralyzing horror.
Standing before them was no ruined outcast. It was Nora Delaney in all her breathtaking, unblemished beauty—the exact, flawless twin image of Celeste Barone, but possessed an unmistakable radiance and strength that made Celeste look like a cheap, plastic imitation.
“You... you didn't have a scar?” Celeste stammered, her voice shaking violently. “You... you took it off?”
“I took off the lie you forced me to wear for ten years, Celeste,” Nora said, her voice echoing powerfully through the high-ceilinged room. “The lie you used to protect your vanity. The lie you used to hide our father’s cowardice.”
“This is treason!” Salvatore screamed, grabbing a wine bottle from the table as if to use it as a weapon. “You are my daughter! You obey me! I’ll cut off Ruth’s medical funding tonight! I’ll throw her into the street to rot!”
Adrian pressed a button on his wheelchair console.
The heavy oak doors of the dining hall slammed open. Marco and six heavily armed Vitali operatives stepped into the room, their tactical rifles trained directly on Salvatore and Celeste’s chests.
“Ruth Delaney was moved to my private medical compound four hours ago, Salvatore,” Adrian informed him with a dark, terrifying smile. “She is surrounded by my personal security team, fully funded for the rest of her life, and completely beyond your pathetic reach.”
Salvatore dropped the wine bottle. It shattered against the floorboards, splash crimson liquid across his polished shoes like fresh blood. He sank back into his chair, completely broken, realizing that every single point of leverage he had held over Nora for a decade had been systematically annihilated.
“And as for you, Celeste,” Nora stepped around the table, coming to a stop directly in front of her trembling sister. She reached into her clutch bag and pulled out the dark glass bottle of poisoned Amaro, setting it down firmly on the tablecloth right before Celeste’s eyes.
“Your wedding gift,” Nora whispered softly. “An old Barone tradition. Would you like me to pour you a glass?”
Celeste backed away, her knees trembling so badly she nearly collapsed onto the floor. “No... no, please... Nora... we’re sisters...”
“We were never sisters,” Nora said coldly. “You treated me like a monster so you could feel like a queen. But look at you now, Celeste. You’re trembling, bankrupt, and caught in your own trap.”
Adrian rolled his chair forward, stopping alongside Nora. He looked up at Salvatore and Celeste with cold, uncompromising finality.
“You have five minutes to get off my property,” Adrian commanded. “If either of you ever steps foot in Lake Forest, or makes a single attempt to contact my wife or her mother again... I won't use lawyers to take your territory. I will send my men to hunt you down like dogs.”
Salvatore didn't argue. He grabbed his terrified daughter by the arm, and together, the ruined Barones fled down the long hallway, their desperate footsteps echoing away into the night.
Silence fell over the magnificent dining hall.
Nora stood beside Adrian’s chair, looking down at the dark glass bottle sitting on the table, feeling a massive, invisible weight lifting off her shoulders forever. She was no longer Nora the outcast. She was no longer the girl in the basement.
She felt a warm hand gently wrap around her fingers. She looked down to see Adrian smiling up at her—a genuine, warm smile that reached his dark gray eyes.

“You were magnificent,” Adrian said softly.
Nora looked into his eyes, a soft smile finally breaking across her own breathtaking face. “I had a very good teacher.”
