Chapter 5 - The Rising Shadow

Lucas froze, his hand holding the tire iron suspended in mid-air.
Out of the shadow of the fitting curtain stepped Daniel Cross.
He did not look like Danny Cole. He did not look like a drifter, a beggar, or a broken man. He moved with the slow, terrifying authority of a military commander stepping onto a battlefield he already owned.
The charcoal suit hugged his broad chest perfectly; the gold cufflinks at his wrists glinted under the low yellow bulbs of the shop; his presence filled the narrow room until the walls themselves seemed to shrink around Lucas and Vanessa.
Vanessa gasped, stepping backward until her spine hit the splintered doorframe. Her jaw dropped, her eyes darting frantically from his polished shoes to his immaculately tailored lapels.
"Daniel?" she whispered, her voice failing her entirely. "You... you can walk?"
"I have been able to walk for sixteen months, Vanessa," Daniel said smoothly, taking a slow, measured step toward her. Each click of his leather soles against the wooden floorboards sounded like the ticking of a countdown clock. "Just as I have been able to buy and sell your father’s logistics company four times over during the period you thought I was living in a homeless shelter."
Lucas swallowed hard, his face turning a sickly shade of grey. "That's... that's impossible! The liquidators—the news reports—you lost everything!"
"I reported what I needed the media to see, Lucas," Daniel replied, leaning against the edge of Eleanor’s cutting table, crossing his arms over his chest. "When a man discovers that his fiancée and her brother are plotting to forge a medical incompetence order against him, he doesn't hire a divorce attorney. He builds a labyrinth. And then he watches you walk right into the center of it."
Vanessa’s mind raced, her panic transforming into a frantic, rat-like cunning. She looked at Lucas’s tire iron, then back at Daniel’s calm face.
"You played us!" she shrieked, her voice cracking with hysteria. "You humiliated me! You made me look like a fool in front of the whole city!"
"You managed that entirely on your own, Vanessa," Eleanor spoke up from behind the counter, her iron tailoring shears still held ready in her hand. "He didn't make you kick over a hot cart of chestnuts. He didn't make you try to rob an old woman in an alleyway. You did that because your soul is as empty as a dry bobbin."
"Shut up!" Lucas roared, his fear snapping into blind rage. He swung the iron pipe toward Daniel’s head with all the strength in his upper body. "I'll kill you, you bastard!"
Daniel didn't even shift his footing.
Before the metal pipe could travel halfway through its arc, the front glass window of Hayes & Son Tailoring exploded inward in a shower of glittering safety glass.
Four heavily armed, body-armored tactical operators wearing unmarked black uniforms swarmed through the shattered frame. The lead operator slammed his Kevlar shield directly into Lucas’s chest, sending the younger man flying backward into a rack of wool trousers. The tire iron clattered uselessly across the floorboards.
Before Lucas could even gasp for air, two operators pinned his arms behind his back, clicking steel handcuffs over his wrists with a cold, metallic SNAP.
Vanessa screamed, diving toward the splintered back door to run into the alley—only to crash directly into the tall, dark frame of Marcus Vance, Daniel’s chief of security.
Marcus didn't move an inch. He simply extended one large, gloved hand, grabbed Vanessa by the collar of her camel-hair coat, and pulled her back into the center of the shop as easily as if she were a wet coat.
"Target Alpha and Target Beta secured, Mr. Cross," Marcus reported, his voice flat, professional, and terrifyingly calm.

Daniel stepped over the broken glass, stopping inches from where Vanessa was kneeling on the floor, restrained by Marcus’s heavy hand.
"That was the first surprise, Vanessa," Daniel murmured, looking down at her with cold, gray eyes. "Now... shall we talk about the second?"
