Chapter 6 - The Paper Fortress

The quiet shop was suddenly filled with the sharp sound of heels clicking against the wooden floorboards outside.

Through the shattered front window stepped a tall, silver-haired woman carrying an sleek aluminum briefcase. She wore a tailored charcoal skirt-suit and held a thick leather binder stamped with the gold seal of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York.

"Good evening, Mr. Cross," the woman said, nodding formally to Daniel.

"Victoria," Daniel replied. "Are the injunctions ready?"

Victoria Vance—no relation to Vanessa, but the senior managing partner of Vance, Sterling & Gold, the premier asset-recovery firm on the East Coast—opened her aluminum case on Eleanor’s cutting table.

Vanessa looked up, her face white with shock. "Victoria Vance? You... you represented our family’s estate three years ago!"

"I represented your father’s holding company, Miss Vale," Victoria corrected coldly, pulling out a sheaf of legal documents bearing red wax seals. "Until forty-eight hours ago, when Mr. Cross acquired ninety-four percent of your family’s outstanding institutional debt from Swiss Credit Union."

Victoria handed the top document to Daniel, who scanned it briefly before handing it down to Vanessa.

"What is this?" Vanessa whimpered, her fingers trembling as she looked at the legal headings.

"That is a Notice of Immediate Foreclosure," Victoria explained with clinical precision. "As of five o'clock this afternoon, Vale Logistics, your father’s primary transport line, was placed into emergency receivership due to fraudulent asset transfer declarations filed by your brother, Lucas."

Lucas groaned from the floor, his face pressed against the dusty floorboards under the heavy boot of a tactical operator. "I... I didn't transfer anything..."

"You transferred four hundred thousand dollars from your father's payroll escrow account into a high-stakes online gambling platform in Macao three weeks ago, Lucas," Victoria said flatly. "We have the IP addresses, the bank confirmations, and the wire receipts. Mr. Cross purchased that debt this morning. He is now the sole primary creditor of your family."

Vanessa looked up at Daniel, her eyes wide with total terror. "Daniel... please... we were engaged! We loved each other once!"

"You loved my bank accounts, Vanessa," Daniel said softly, stepping closer until his shadow completely covered her. "And you loved the power you thought came with them. But you forgot one simple rule of business: never attempt to destroy a man who built the house you're standing in."

He turned to Victoria. "What is the total personal liability for both targets under the federal racketeering charges?"

"With tonight's attempted robbery, assault with a deadly weapon, and corporate extortion recorded on three separate high-definition angles?" Victoria smiled thinly. "Minimum twelve years without possibility of parole for Mr. Vale. Miss Vale faces eight to ten for conspiracy, grand larceny, and corporate fraud."

Vanessa began to weep hysterically, her expensive makeup running down her cheeks in black tracks. "Daniel, please! Don't do this! I'll do anything! I'll apologize to the old woman! I'll clean his cart! I'll clean the whole street!"

Daniel looked past her, turning his eyes toward Eleanor, who was standing quietly behind the counter, watching the entire spectacle with a look of profound, solemn dignity.

"Eleanor," Daniel said gently. "What would you like done with them?"

Eleanor looked down at Vanessa, then at Lucas, her expression showing no hatred, no anger, only a quiet, deep sadness for two lives wasted on greed.

"Take them away, Danny," Eleanor said softly. "They're cluttering up my shop, and I have work to do tomorrow."

"You heard the lady," Daniel commanded.

Marcus and his operators lifted Lucas and Vanessa from the floor like sacks of flour, dragging them out through the shattered front window toward three waiting black SUVs idling at the curb. Vanessa’s screams for mercy echoed down Riverside Avenue until the heavy doors of the vehicles slammed shut, drowning out her voice forever.
