Chapter 8 - The Aftermath of Blackwood

By sunrise, the Blackwood estate was cleared.
Four black SUVs from the state police division—accompanied by federal agents assigned to the organized crime task force—pulled out of the front gates, carrying Leonardo Pascale and his remaining loyalists in heavy iron restraints. The evidence recovered from Leonardo’s private office, including the false financial ledgers and the original hit contract on Massimo, was secured inside state evidence boxes.
Isabella stood on the front steps of the estate, wrapped in a blanket, sipping hot coffee while Marco organized the replacement security detail for the estate.
Inside the quiet sunroom, the morning light streamed through the clean glass windows.
Massimo sat on the velvet sofa—not in his wheelchair, which had been pushed into a corner of the room like an obsolete relic of the past—wearing a clean white shirt and dark trousers.
Margot sat opposite him, her clipboard resting on her knees, completing the final administrative log of her three-month contract.
"Patient demonstrates full weight-bearing capacity," Margot read aloud as she wrote, her pen moving smoothly across the paper. "Gait stability at eighty-five percent. Independent transfer capability achieved. Discharged from acute physical therapy care as of December twenty-eighth."
She closed the folder with a clean, sharp snap.
"Contract complete, Mr. Pascale," she said, looking up at him with a quiet, bittersweet smile.
Massimo looked at the thick black folder in her hands, then up at her face.
"So you're leaving," he said.
"My classes start again on Monday in Chicago," she said, setting the folder on the coffee table. "My tuition fees are fully cleared, Dr. Vance has been stripped of his department seat following an anonymous institutional review submitted by your legal team three days ago, and my doctoral dissertation has been restored to primary publication status."
She stood up, pulling her cardigan over her shoulders and picking up her shoulder bag.
"You gave me my career back, Massimo," she said softly.
Massimo stood up from the sofa—slowly, steadily, his posture straight and magnificent—and walked across the rug until he was standing directly in front of her.
"And you gave me my life back, Margot," he said softly.
He reached out, his large, warm hand gently cupping her jaw, his thumb tracing the soft curve of her cheekbone.
"Fifty thousand dollars was the price of a nurse," Massimo whispered, his dark eyes searching hers with intense, unfathomable heat. "What is the price to keep the doctor?"
Margot felt her heart leap into her throat. She looked up into his face, feeling the steady, powerful rhythm of his presence—a man who had survived the dark, who had fought through hell, and who now stood before her completely transformed.
"I don't work for mob bosses, Massimo," she murmured, a soft, teasing smile touching her lips.
"I am no longer the boss of Blackwood," Massimo revealed quietly. "Last night, I transferred full legal control of the logistics firm and family commercial assets into an independent corporate trust managed by Isabella. I am retired, Margot. I am simply a man with a very good spine and a great deal of free time."

Margot blinked in surprise. "You gave it up?"
"I gave up the target on my back," he corrected, leaning down until his lips were a fraction of an inch from hers. "So I could choose something worth living for."
