Chapter 10 - THE DANCE

Midnight at the Belladonna Hotel.
The press conference had ended, the reporters had left, and the grand ballroom had been cleared of the political crowds.
Only the soft, warm light of the crystal chandeliers illuminated the vast polished marble floor where, three weeks ago, shattered glass and blood had marked the beginning of everything.
A single cellist sat near the stage, playing a slow, beautiful melody that echoed softly off the tall walls.
Clara stood near the center of the room, looking down at the marble floor where she had once dropped her tray.
"Thinking about that night?" a smooth, deep voice asked behind her.
Clara turned to see Matteo walking toward her, having removed his suit jacket, his collar unbuttoned slightly, looking relaxed and entirely at peace.
"I was thinking about how terrified I was," Clara admitted with a soft laugh. "I thought I was going to be fired. I thought my life was over."
"And now?" Matteo asked, stopping right in front of her.
"And now," Clara said, reaching out to rest her hand gently against his chest, feeling the steady beat of his heart, "I realize it was just beginning."
Matteo placed one hand gently around her waist and took her hand with the other, leading her into a slow, effortless dance across the marble floor.
"My father asked me a question at the gala," Matteo said softly as they turned beneath the warm light. "He asked me who I was going to dance with."
Clara looked up into his dark eyes. "What did you tell him?"
"I told him I'd dance with whoever survived the evening," Matteo whispered, pulling her closer against his chest. "I didn't know then that the person who survived would be the girl who saved me from becoming just like my father."
"You saved yourself, Matteo," Clara said, resting her cheek against his shoulder as they swayed to the music.
"No," Matteo murmured into her hair, his arms holding her tight against the world outside. "You showed me what was worth fighting for."

Outside the tall arched windows of the Belladonna, the city of New York stretched out under the quiet night sky—a city of shadows, power, and danger. But inside the glittering ballroom, on the polished marble floor, there were no heiresses, no ledgers, and no empires.
There was only a prince, his queen, and a dance that would last a lifetime.
