Chapter 9 - THE HEIRESS'S RECKONING

Three weeks later.

The city had settled into a fragile, new peace. The Moretti, Laurent, and Bellini families had been dismantled, their holdings absorbed into the DeLuca syndicate under Matteo's firm, modernized leadership.

Inside the grand ballroom of the Belladonna Hotel, a massive press conference and formal gathering was underway.

The fifth heiress—Vivienne Cross—sat in the front row alongside high-society reporters and city officials. She looked nervous, adjusting her pearls, realizing that the old power dynamics of New York had been shattered forever.

Vittorio DeLuca stood at the podium on the stage, addressing the crowd.

"For decades," Vittorio announced into the microphones, "our family has operated in the shadows of this city's economy. But today, under the leadership of my son, Matteo, we are launching the Bennett Foundation—a fifty-million-dollar charitable initiative dedicated to healthcare access and education for working families across New York."

The room erupted into applause. Cameras flashed continuously.

Vittorio stepped back, gesturing for Matteo to take the podium.

Matteo walked up, looking powerful and immaculate in a dark blue tailored suit. He adjusted the microphone and looked directly out into the crowd.

"This foundation," Matteo spoke clearly, his voice carrying across the grand ballroom, "is named in honor of Arthur Bennett—a man who worked honestly with his hands to build a life for his children."

Matteo turned to the side of the stage. "And it will be chaired exclusively by his daughter."

Clara stepped onto the stage.

She didn't wear a maid's uniform. She didn't wear borrowed silk.

She wore a custom, breathtaking midnight-blue gown that complemented her amber-brown eyes perfectly. Her hair fell in elegant waves over her shoulders, and around her neck hung a simple, elegant diamond pendant that matched her eyes.

She walked with a slight, graceful confidence, her foot fully healed.

The crowd gasped. The socialites who had ignored her three weeks ago were now standing on their feet, applauding as she walked up to stand beside Matteo.

Vivienne Cross stared up at the stage, her mouth slightly open in defeat, realizing that the game was officially over. The waitress had not just won the prince—she had redefined the throne.

Clara stood beside Matteo at the podium, looking out over the sea of flashing cameras and powerful people.

Matteo reached down under the podium stand, his fingers weaving firmly through hers.

"You ready for this?" he whispered to her, a rare, genuine smile touching his lips.

Clara looked up at him, her heart full and steady. "With you? Always."
