Chapter 5 - The Hidden Perception

By three in the morning, the estate had been completely recertified by a secondary, external security team brought in from out of state. The infants were peacefully sleeping in temporary cribs installed in Adrien’s primary master suite—the most heavily fortified room on the property.

Adrien sat in a leather armchair near the fire, a glass of scotch resting untouched on the side table. Across from him sat Dr. Gable and a specialist in childhood sensory processing whom Adrien had flown in via private jet an hour prior.

"It’s an extraordinary case of sensory hyper-acuity," the specialist explained, reviewing Sophie's developmental profile. "Children with this condition don't just hear pitches outside the normal human range; they process environmental vibrations and electromagnetic hums as physical tactile feelings. What was agonizing noise to the infants was visible and felt as a distinct vibration to Sophie."

"She mentioned a lady in the wall singing," Adrien noted thoughtfully.

"High-frequency audio pulses often bounce off plaster surfaces in structural patterns," the specialist replied. "To a young child's brain, those localized echo patterns can easily be interpreted as voice-like or musical resonances."

There was a light knock on the heavy mahogany door. Elena stepped in nervously, holding Sophie by the hand. "Mr. Moretti... Sophie said she couldn't sleep. She asked if she could check on the babies."

Adrien nodded, gesturing for them to enter. Sophie walked softly across the hardwood floor, wearing her pajamas and still clutching her cloth doll. She walked right over to the edge of Theo’s crib, peeking over the padded lining.

The infant stirred slightly, opening his dark eyes. Instead of crying, Theo reached out a tiny arm, his fingers grasping the faded patchwork fabric of Sophie's doll.

"They are warm now," Sophie said, looking up at Adrien. "The bad clock is gone."

Adrien looked at the young girl with a mixture of profound gratitude and intense curiosity. "Sophie... how did you know where the sound was coming from when even the doctors couldn't find it?"

Sophie tilted her head, her clear blue eyes looking directly into his. "Because the house talks when it’s hurt, Mr. Moretti. You just have to be quiet enough to listen."
