Chapter 9 - The New Guardian

By the following evening, the syndicate threat had been dismantled. Adrien’s enforcement teams had swept through Vincent’s local distribution nodes, reclaiming complete authority over the Chicago territory without a single civilian noticing the silent war that had occurred overnight.

Inside the Lake Forest mansion, peace had finally returned. The heavy silence that once felt cold and intimidating now felt secure.

Adrien walked down the grand hallway toward the nursery. The micro-transmitter had been completely removed, the subfloor repaired, and extra acoustic padding installed beneath the brand-new silk rug. Inside the brightly lit room, Theo, Miles, and Nora were laughing softly, lying on their backs as a brass musical mobile rotated slowly above their cribs.

Sitting on the floor between the cribs was Sophie. She was wearing a fresh blue dress this time, holding her cloth doll and softly singing a quiet lullaby her mother had taught her. Elena stood nearby, folding baby blankets with a warm, relieved smile on her face.

Adrien stepped into the room, leaning his tall frame against the doorframe. "Elena," he spoke softly.

Elena turned, bowing her head respectfully. "Yes, Mr. Moretti?"

"Starting tomorrow, your duties in the estate change," Adrien said. "I am appointing you as the master of the domestic staff with a tripled salary, and your living quarters are being moved to the main family suite on the second floor."

Elena’s eyes widened in disbelief. "Mr. Moretti... I don't know what to say. That is too generous!"

"It isn't a gift, Elena," Adrien said, turning his gaze to four-year-old Sophie, who had stopped singing to look at him. "Your daughter possesses a gift that protected my family when all my millions and armed guards failed. She stays close to my children from now on."
