Chapter 8 - The Weekend at the Coast

The ocean breeze blew soft and cool over the cliffs of Montauk as the emerald Bentley swept up the long driveway toward Julian’s private estate.

The house was a stunning modern masterpiece of dark glass, natural stone, and cedar wood, sitting atop a high bluff overlooking the roaring Atlantic Ocean.

For two days, the corporate world vanished completely.

There were no phone calls, no financial reports, and no press inquiries.

They spent Saturday morning walking along the private beach below the house. The cool sea spray misted their faces as they walked hand-in-hand along the wet sand, the tide washing over their bare feet.

Nadine wore a soft cream knit sweater and comfortable jeans. She felt light, free, and profoundly happy.

"I used to think happiness was something other people were born with," Nadine said softly, looking out at the endless blue horizon. "Like a talent or a trust fund."

Julian stopped, turning her to face him. He reached up, tucking a wild strand of dark hair behind her ear.

"And now?" he asked gently.

"Now I know happiness is something you choose when you decide to stop letting cruel people define your worth," she answered, looking directly into his eyes.

Julian looked down at her face, his heart aching with an intensity he had never experienced in his forty-two years of life. He had built a vast financial empire, conquered dangerous enemies, and earned terrifying power.

Yet sitting right here, holding this woman on a quiet beach, was the only victory that had ever truly mattered to him.

"Nadine," Julian said, his raspy voice dropping into a tender, solemn tone.

He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small velvet box.

Nadine gasped, her hand flying to her mouth.

Julian didn't drop to one knee. He stood tall, looking down into her eyes with absolute, unwavering sincerity. He opened the box, revealing a flawless, five-carat emerald-cut diamond ring set in heavy platinum.

"I didn't ask you to marry me on a stage or before three hundred fake friends," Julian said softly. "I'm asking you here, where there are no cameras, no debts, and no motives."

He took the ring from the velvet box, holding it between his long fingers.

"Nadine Fletcher, will you marry me? Not to save your family, not to spite Grant Wescott, but because you want to build a life with a man who loves every single inch of who you are?"

Tears poured down Nadine's cheeks, bright and warm under the afternoon sun. She stepped closer, sliding her hands around his thick neck, pressing her body against his.

"Yes," she sobbed softly, laughing through her tears. "Yes, Julian! A thousand times, yes!"

Julian slipped the heavy diamond onto her finger, then lifted her off her feet, swinging her around as her joyful laughter carried over the roar of the ocean waves.
